Lacking access to adequate shelter and nourishment, numerous stray dogs struggle to stay alive amid harsh winter conditions.

In St. Louis, Missouri, a compassionate team of rescuers learned about a family of dogs seeking refuge in a deserted building.

Separated from the warmth and safety of a home, a mother dog and her puppies were on the brink of a desperate situation.

Exposed to the cold, hunger, and without a stable shelter, this canine family longed for nothing more than a warm and safe haven.

The Last-Minute Miracle

Donna Lochmann, an experienced rescuer with Stray Rescue of St. Louis, was alerted by a local about a pregnant dog in an abandoned house nearby.

"We followed paw prints through the snow to an abandoned building where a Good Samaritan said they saw a pregnant dog."

"The single digit freezing temperatures were dangerous and would be deadly to newborns," shared Stray Rescue of St. Louis on their Facebook page.

Without delay, Donna and her colleagues rushed to the location.

After carefully searching the abandoned house, they discovered a dog nestled in a corner - surrounded by her six puppies!

They were amazed to find that the mother had already given birth and was keeping her little ones warm amidst the biting cold.

"Our fingers and toes hurt from the cold, we can't believe this resilient little family survived as long as they did," they expressed in their Facebook post.

The puppies were huddled together, trying to keep warm next to their mother, yet the derelict house provided little relief from the cold.

Off To A New Start

The team decided to leash the mother first, hoping her puppies would follow her lead.

Although she was initially frightened and hesitant, she quickly realized that they were there to help.

The mother, later named Grammys, and her six precious puppies, humorously named Emmys, Oscars, SAG, Golden Globes, BAFTA, and Tonys, were all safely rescued from the house.

Following a veterinary checkup, the dog family was moved to a foster home, where they began to receive the care and attention they desperately needed.

Finally experiencing the warmth of a loving home, they quickly started to relax and enjoy their new surroundings.

"Look how cozy and spread out they are now that they are safe and warm in a foster home."

"That abandoned house they were in felt even colder than the freezing air outside," wrote the SRSL team on Facebook.

The foster family is committed to giving the dogs plenty of tender loving care.

Considering everything they've endured, it will understandably take some time for them to fully trust and become comfortable around humans.

Once fully recuperated and strong, Grammys and her little ones will be ready for adoption.
