Dogs love people food. They beg so patiently, and so earnestly, with those big, round eyes. Sometimes it's hard to say no. But, unfortunately, dogs don't always know what's good for them, so you have to.
Even when something's good for you, it might not be good for your furry best friend. It doesn't always seem to make sense, but dogs and humans are different enough that healthy foods don't always translate.
So knowledge is power: avoid feeding them these 12 fruits and veggies to keep their tails wagging.
Please SHARE this on Facebook if you know an owner who needs to be aware of what they're feeding their dog.
#1 Apple Seeds
Apple flesh is safe for dogs, but the seeds contain cyanide. They might have to eat lots of seeds for it to be an issue, but again, dogs don't always know what's good for them and will chow down on whatever's at hand.
Also, dogs with existing kidney troubles can get complications from the calcium and phosphorus in apples, so they should be avoided altogether.
#2 Apricots
The seeds, leaves, and stems of apricots also contain cyanide. Dogs can also choke on the pits.
#3 Cherries
As with apricots, cherry pits and stems contain cyanide, and Fido generally won't stop eating to spit the pits out.
#4 Grapes
It's not known exactly what does the damage, but grapes and raisins can cause vomiting, diarrhea, loss of appetite, weakness, abdominal pain, and ultimately fatal kidney failure.
#5 Tomatoes
The red parts of tomatoes are safe for dogs, but they won't like green tomatoes, even if they're fried. The green parts are toxic for dogs and ingesting too much tomato can cause stomach problems, weakness, and confusion.
#6 Mushrooms
The trouble with mushrooms and dogs is the same as it is for humans: knowing which ones are safe, and which are poisonous. Symptoms will vary depending on the type of mushroom your dog eats, but they can cause vomiting, diarrhea, weakness, lethargy, seizures, jaundice, and excessive drooling.
#7 Onions
Raw or cooked, onions are an absolute no-no for dogs. The toxins in onions damage red blood cells, causing anemia. They will also cause stomach problems, liver damage, weakness, diarrhea, and vomiting.
#8 Garlic
Closely related to onions, garlic is even worse. It's considered to be five times as toxic for canines as onions are. Garlic poisoning leads to muscle weakness, rapid heart rate, diarrhea, vomiting, pale gums, exercise intolerance, and breathlessness.
#9 Currants
Containing the same toxicity as grapes and raisins, currants should be avoided as well. They can cause vomiting, diarrhea, and kidney failure.
#10 Raw and Green Potatoes
The green parts of potatoes and tomatoes contain the same substance that causes problems for dogs.
#11 Rhubarb
We love rhubarb in pies, but in dogs, rhubarb (especially the leaves) depletes calcium, leading to kidney failure. Symptoms include tremors, bloody urine, vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, drooling, and loss of appetite.
#12 Persimmons
As with so many other fruits, the seeds of persimmons are troublesome for dogs. They can inflame the intestines and cause an intestinal obstruction. They can also have a laxative effect.
