The 2010 Ministerial Declaration on “Implementing the internationally agreed goals and commitments in regard to gender equality and empowerment of women identified discriminatory attitudes and gender stereotypes as a persistent and cross-cutting issue that needs to be addressed to accelerate progress in achieving gender equality goals as well as other internationally agreed development goals and commitments, including the Millennium Development Goals. The declaration also called for effective policy responses including in the area of education and media.

Amongst the variant issues, that an individual has to deal with whilst working in an enterprise, gender discrimination has always been the top scorer. Gender discrimination is defined as differentiating between employees on the grounds of their gender or their association with a particular gender group.

#2 Objectification of Women

According to the Geena Davis Institute on Gender in Media, hypersexualized images in television programs, movies and magazines promote physical and verbal sexual harassment of women. When women are objectified, men are more likely to commit violent crimes against them and less likely to face punishment. RAINN, an anti-sexual assault organization, notes that although 1 in every 6 women has been the victim of rape, only 3 percent of assailants serve jail time.

Additionally, when the media glorify a specific set of features, women go to great lengths to attain this unrealistic definition of beauty. The Geena Davis Institute's research, conducted by Stacy Smith, Ph.D., and her team at the USC Annenberg School for Communication & Journalism, found that when females fail to achieve these exaggerated body characteristics, negative self-esteem and body-image issues arise.

#3 Gender discrimination is the unfair treatment of a person because of gender.

Gender discrimination affects both men and women. It is apparent in work situations where one gender is given preferential treatment or one gender receives less pay or job responsibilities because of gender bias and unfair stereotypes. Gender discrimination also exists in sports, educational institutions and political organizations. Genders also experience sex discrimination when applying for housing or applying for credit.

Gender discrimination is mostly done in all over universe. Our society cannot see a women working in any field whether that could be a office works or other official works that includes marketing or so.

There is always been a negative sign for a women working in the field.

#4 Effect of Gender Discrimination on Employees

As per the figures of TNS Research Surveys, 68% women believe that gender discrimination exists in their workplace. The Equal Pay Act of 1963 put an end to the practice of paying more money to men as compared to women for serving the same duties. However, despite such protection, many women are still underpaid in some enterprises and businesses. When employees are subjected to gender discrimination, it has a number of after effects on them such as:

1.Hampered Productivity:

Women who go through gender discrimination might often lose the motivation and desire to perform effectively in their respective jobs. According to a report by a WorldWatch Institute, gender discrimination hampers the productivity of an individual.

2. Unstable Financial Condition:

Gender discrimination at times includes passing promotion to the men as compared to more deserving women working in the organization. Whilst this demotivates the women, it may also make their financial status unstable.

3.Destruction of Property:

Gender discrimination at times may result in violent activities from the person who is subjected to such discrimination. The victims may resort to destruction of the office property, violence towards to co-workers or in worst-case scenario self-destruction, in order to get back to the organization.

#5 Outcomes of Gender Discrimination on an Organization

Since discrimination against women in the workplace is generally regarded as having a negative impact on quality of life, systematic managerial efforts to prevent such discrimination have been enforced. Our study examines whether perceived/experienced discrimination against women consistently influences two subjective kinds of well-being: job satisfaction and work engagement. It will consider how the impact varies according to different dimensions of discrimination, what kinds of moderators intervene to influence the effect on subjective well-being and how they do so.

Empirical findings from three-wave panel data with a sample of 5987 female workers show the negative effects of discrimination on these two forms of subjective well-being.

#6 Effects of Gender Discrimination and Reported Stress on Drug Use

Gender discrimination has been associated with worse health outcomes for U.S. women. Using the stress and coping process framework, we examined whether lifetime gender discrimination was associated with maladaptive coping behaviors, namely, lifetime and recent hard drug use.

Gender discrimination is positively associated with both lifetime and recent hard drug use. It did not find support for the mediation hypothesis, because stress was not associated with either lifetime or recent hard drug use. There was evidence of some race moderation for the Latina sample. Among these respondents, gender discrimination was associated with higher odds of lifetime drug use, whereas stress was associated with lower odds.

#7 The Cost of Gender Inequality

Throughout the world women often receive less education and are not employed at the same rate as their male counter parts. In the United States, there are nearly twice as many men as women with professional or doctoral degrees, and 70.5 percent of men either have a job or are looking for one compared to just 58.1 percent of women. And in countries like Yemen, gender disparities are seen even in secondary school where boys enroll at a rate 20 percentage points higher than girls.

There are many potential variables that could account for this inequality – societal norms, gender discrimination, or the challenges surrounding childcare – but what is becoming more obvious is that this gap is negatively impacting entire populations.Arguably more vital to economic success is the population shift due to fertility rates. Previous research shows that low levels of education are highly correlated with higher pregnancy rates. This leads to populations with a labor force that cannot support the rest of the population.

#8 Promoting Gender Equality and Empowering Women

As we see daily in news reports, we have a long way to go before all women have the chance to live independent, fulfilled lives, but we are making some headway in gender equality. Whether it's empowering girls by providing access to education, making sure that young mothers have the necessary maternal care, or equipping women with the knowledge and resources required to sustain their own income, these efforts require your continued support.
