Gold-Digging Boyfriend Demands Half The Rental Income When He Finds Out His Girlfriend Owns The Building

Dating is tough. Finding someone you have chemistry with is already difficult, and once you do find them there's a strong chance they'll throw you a curve ball big enough, that you need to start from scratch.

When OP was young, she was fortunate enough to receive a house as a gift from her father.

With the house being built like an apartment from the inside, OP was able to have tenants and give them all separate entrances. 

OP lived upstairs while her tenants had the lower floor.

When OP's boyfriend moved in three months ago, he assumed that OP too was a tenant. In those three months he never once asked her about the rent. OP also paid for all the utilities.

OP also didn't mention that she owned the building and the topic never came up.

The truth came out when OP was speaking to her tenant about a broken fridge and had to get a replacement.

Her boyfriend was confused as to why OP would be the one to get the replacement. This is when she clarified that as the landlord, it was her responsibility.  This is when her boyfriend had a meltdown.

He screamed and blamed her for hiding information from him. OP apologized for not letting him know sooner but didn't think it was important.

He continued to escalate the situation and compared OP to corrupt and exploitative landlords.

OP clarified that she does not engage in predatory practices and tries to be a good landlord.

To add a cherry on top, her boyfriend demanded a share of the rent for himself. So not only was he living in her home rent-free, but he also wanted half her income from the rent.

OP wondered if she was in the wrong for not telling him sooner and the two were not on speaking terms since then.

In a later update after several commenters encouraged her to break things off, OP took the plunge.

She called her father for support and asked him to stay nearby when she broke up with him.

When she told him that they were over, he started screaming, threw his keys at her, and tried punching a hole in the wall. Luckily OP's father was able to reach the scene before his violence escalated.

Her boyfriend then left.

They were also baffled by his entitlement in demanding a cut of the rent.
