Everyone has one Christmas movie that they watch at least once a year during the holiday season. For me, that movie is Home Alone. Watching Kevin McCallister deal with two obnoxious burglars while drinking eggnog is an absolute treat. But regardless of how many times I've seen the film, I never noticed one thing in particular.
Hardly Anybody Noticed This Massive Plot Hole In The 'Home Alone' Movies
#1 "Home Alone" is a Christmas classic.
It introduced the world to the adorable Macaulay Culkin, decades before he became the sorta-creepy Macaulay Culkin.
#2 But there's a big problem with this Christmas classic.
And no, it's not that a family left their child at home while going on vacation, despite (we assume) buying a ticket for him that they'd certainly have seen at some point when getting onto the airplane.
#3 No, this one's a little more troubling.
It's not that an 8-year-old was able to terrorize two men, including friggin' Joe Pesci, to the point where they were almost certainly debilitated for life.
#4 Here's the problem...
Okay, first, take a look at the McCallister house. What do you notice?
#5 That's at least a $500,000 house.
We're being pretty conservative there. The film's set in the Chicago suburbs, so that massive house could easily be worth a few million dollars.
#6 The family's also racking up a massive electric bill.
And that vacation wasn't cheap, either; Kevin has two brothers and two sisters, and their parents bought them all tickets to Paris (including Kevin's ticket, which was completely wasted).
#7 How did they afford all of that?
The only answer that makes sense is that the elder McCallister is a drug lord, right? And here's where the internet comes up with some ridiculous ideas.
#8 Maybe the family left Kevin at home on purpose.
They're testing him -- is he smart enough to handle the challenges of running a drug empire on his own?
#9 Oh, while we're at it, we'll ruin another part of the movie for you.
You know the "keep the change, ya filthy animal" movie that Kevin's watching? It's not a real movie; the scene was filmed just for "Home Alone."
#10 So, in summary, your childhood's ruined.
Merry Christmas.
