Now, she’s trying to parlay her infamous off-the-cuff catchphrase into serious cash.
'Hawk Tuah Girl' Hailey Welch Opens Up About Viral Fame In First Interview
Hailey Welch, who quickly became known as "Hawk Tuah Girl" after a clip from a Nashville interview went viral, recently gave her first in-depth interview.
This was her first extensive conversation since that notorious moment.
In a conversation with Brianna Lapaglia on the "Plan Bri Uncut" podcast this past Monday, Welch, aged 21, addressed the interview.
She sought to clear up some misconceptions floating around the internet about her.
Contrary to what some might think, she clarified that she's not a teacher and her father is far from being a preacher.
She shared that she's employed at a spring factory in her small Tennessee hometown.
On the night she noticed her video going viral, she was preparing for her graveyard shift that started at 2 a.m.
She mentioned that she had already deleted her social media accounts well before the video that shot her to fame became popular.
In the video, she casually described a favorite bedroom technique with a distinct Southern accent.
Welch admitted she was absolutely shocked by the sudden explosion of her online fame.
She said she nearly "s–t a brick" when she realized how widely her video was being shared.
Now, Welch is looking to turn her spontaneous catchphrase from the video into a profitable venture.
She has already made a significant amount of money from merchandise branded with her catchphrase and now works with a full management and video team that documents her activities.
Lapaglia, who is currently dating country music star Zach Bryan, brought Welch on stage at his concert in Nashville last Saturday.
Welch joined the podcast dressed in the same attire she wore at the concert—daisy dukes, white boots, a white tank top, and an oversized cowboy hat.
She recounted the events of that transformative night.
While hanging out with friends on the streets of Nashville following the CMA Fest, she told LaPaglia: "next thing I know there's a microphone in my face."
Welch attributed her memorable and candid response in the interview to her outgoing personality.
She joked, "I could talk to a brick wall if you really let me."
Reflecting on the interview, she said she thought little of it at the time and never expected the video to resurface.
But to her surprise, she said:
"Sure enough, I seen it again."
