When anyone sits down to write out their bucket list, it is easy to lose sight of what really matters. Travelling the world sounds like a ton of fun, but there are literally thousands of other activities that are much easier to achieve, especially if time is a factor. Chris Betancourt and Dillon Hill are putting together a time-constrained bucket list as Chris only has one year left to live.
He Quit School To Help His Dying Friend Finish His Bucket List
On Memorial Day, in 2009, Chris collapsed while at the beach. He spent the next 13 hours in an emergency room. He was diagnosed with Chronic Myelogenous Leukemia. During his diagnosis and a lot of miserable months of treatment, his two best friends, Vincent and Dillon, stood by his side. The boys have a really close bond that originally formed over their love for video games.
Chris had gone into remission and was able to finally return home. A couple uneventful years passed. However, five years after he was first admitted to the hospital, Chris was devastated by the news of his sister taking her own life. Between his own diagnosis and the loss of his beloved sister, Chris was pushed to an emotional brink. Despite all of the turmoil in Chris' life, he tried to remain positive. He graduated high school and was starting to think about his future when he hoped to work in the IT industry.
Chris' parents went their separate ways. She headed to Puerto Rico and his father left for Florida. Even still, Chris stayed strong and optimistic about his future. He started working as an electrician to save up money before enrolling in Sacramento City College. However, just as things were looking up for Chris, life threw him another curveball.
On September 2, 2017, Chris got the worst news possible. Cancer in his blood cells had returned. Chris and 19-year-old Dillon, his best friend, have a shared website where they plan to document the upcoming year. "This time, the cancer was a new mutated string that is resilient to most of the experimental drugs he had used before. Though difficult to acknowledge, Chris has one year to live."
The news of Chris' cancer returning deeply affected Dillon as he had to face losing his best friend. He was determined to not let Chris go through this alone or let his last year of life slip by without celebrating, so Dillon dropped out of college to help Chris do everything on his bucket list.
So far, the boys have raised over $4000 of their $10,000 goal in less than two weeks through GoFundMe. They are going to use the money to tick things off of Chris's bucket list.
The journey is just beginning for these two, but for now, the pair is waiting for more donations so they can start their adventure.
