#2 He Did Something Terrible
Star Randel-Hanson decided to visit a psychic near his hometown in the UK, so he went to see a friend of his roommates, tarot card reader Jayne Braiden. When he asked for his reading with the local psychic he told her he had done "something terrible".
#3 His First Three Cards Told Her What He Had Done
When he sat down with Jayne at her shop, JJ Tarot on the Brighton Seafront, she told Randel-Hanson to pick 10 cards from the table. But the first three he drew the blasted tower, the emperor, and the devil card caused him to break down in tears. Jayne knew right away that something was horribly wrong.
#4 He Drew The 'Death' Card
"The first was the blasted tower which means falling out with someone, a really serious row (argument)," she told the court. "Then there was the emperor, the dominant male. Then the devil card means obviously something awful, she continued, "He broke down and I said to him: ‘Look I can see here that this is not good, you need to tell me everything, let's talk.'" That's when he confessed his crime to her.
#5 Stabbed And Killed His Roommate
Randel-Hanson admitted he had stabbed his housemate Derick Marney, 70, and left his body lying on their kitchen floor. but said he "did not mean to". The two men met at the Brotherhood Gate spiritualist church in Brighton in 2013 and moved in together a short while later.
They shared a bed but were not lovers, the court heard. But Randel-Hanson testified that Marney had made several unwanted sexual advance towards him. The 56-year-old said he had stabbed him while the pair were arguing in the kitchen and left his body there for 10 days before he went to JJ Tarot for the card reading.
#6 Police Though Her Emergency Call Was A Hoax
Ms. Braiden said she had explained to Randel-Hanson that she had to call the police but when she called 999 her inquiry was downgraded to "non-emergency" as officers assumed it was a hoax. Ms. Braiden told the court how the operator replied: "OK, it's not a 999 call I am afraid. It is a 101 [the non-emergency number] call." She kept Hanson talking and calm until the police finally arrived one hour later. After revealing the story they went to the home of Mr. Marney and found him dead.
Although Randel-Hanson insists the stabbing was an accident, he was found guilty and sentenced to serve a minimum of 15 years in prison before being considered for parole.
