Fifty sandbags were placed outside the house, but they did little to stop the tide as one wave crashed with such force it almost reached the top of the window screen.

'There was rocks coming from the beach and hitting the windows,' Lynch added. 'It was crazy.'

'I've never seen anything like it. I've never seen the water get that far to the house,' he said, explaining that the home was 150 feet away from the beach's dunes.

Lynch's video was just one of many posted by Floridians who watched as Hurricane Matthew ripped across the state on Friday afternoon.

More than one million households have been left without power and 22,000 people remain in shelters as the storm headed up the coast toward Jacksonville.

Matthew has already claimed 842 victims in the Caribbean and there has been three reported deaths in the US.

They included two people in St Lucie, a woman in her late fifties who suffered a heart attack and an 82-year-old man who reported difficulty breathing.

Emergency vehicles could not safely get to either the man or woman in time due to the strong winds, according to ABC News.

A woman in her sixties was also killed in Volusia County when she went outside to feed her animals and was killed when a tree fell on top of her.

As the eye of the storm passed Daytona Beach, the winds became so severe that the Daytona Beach Fire Department had to suspend services for six hours.

Mike Lovechhio, a resident in the city's beachside area, posted multiple videos from his window that showed palm trees violently swaying back and forth as electric power lines shook in the gust.

Lovecchio also shared several pictures of nearby homes that appeared to have suffered roof damage.

Earlier Lovecchio tweeted as the eye of the storm hit, saying his doors were shaking and that he could feel the 'pressure change in the house'.

Another video showed a river of water flowing through the downtown streets of St Augustine during a storm surge.

It was reported that 20 people were trapped at Casablanca Inn On The Bay, a bed and breakfast in the city, and that there were children inside.

But Mayor Nancy Shaver said authorities discovered that the people inside the inn were not guests but young people 'who have chosen to stay there'.

'We have been in contact with them and they have told us they really don't wish to have any assistance,' she told CNN.

Shaver added that the area was a mandatory evacuation zone but that she believes at least 50 percent of the people in the area 'who should have evacuated did not'.
