As anyone who's ever lived in a college dorm knows, humans are disgusting, giant petri dishes. It's actually a miracle that our species has survived this long, given how much bacteria we spread around and to each other.
Here's The Disgusting Reason Why You Should Throw Out Your Shower Loofah
#1
As you may remember from the good old college days, no place is grosser than a communal shower. Even wearing shoes won't fully protect you from the filth of your fellow humans. But, as it turns out, the grossest part of bathrooms isn't what you'd expect...
#2 A study published in the Journal Of Clinical Microbiology determined that your loofah is basically a toxic germ colony.
Yes, those mesh sponges that are perpetually on sale at Walmart or Bed, Bath, and Beyond provide refuge to a terrifying range of bacteria that warm, moist (we apologize for using this word, but it really is appropriate here) environment that makes for a relaxing shower also allows for bacteria to spread almost immediately.
...And then it doesn't help when the bacteria and skin cells can get caught in the folds of the loofah, only to be spread around again with each use.
#3 And it gets grosser.
J. Matthew Knight, a dermatologist at the Knight Dermatology Institute, says that mold and yeast (like, yeast from your nether regions) can easily grow in the folds of a loofah. So, if you happen to shave in the shower and nick your skin, you're basically opening yourself up to a nasty infection.
...No surprise, then, that an estimated 98% of dermatologists suggest tossing the loofah our shower pouf.
#4 So, if you're immune to reason, and you just can't quit your loofah, here's what you need to know:
Don't store the nasty little germ factory in the bathroom or shower. Remove it after use and store it someplace clean and dry. And definitely change it out every 2-3 weeks.
