While others passed him in the fast lane of the M62 near Leeds, a driver had a seizure while operating his vehicle, and John Barlow rushed to help him.
Hero Dad Stops Out-Of-Control Car To Save M62 Driver Who Suffered Seizure In Fast Lane
A brave father stopped a "dead-looking" driver who was traveling at 30 mph in the fast lane of a highway and was covered in blood.
Confused On the M62 near Leeds on Saturday, John Barlow, 59, looked into a slow-moving car to determine why it was traveling at such a dangerous speed before springing into action, according to Manchester Evening News.
John from Rochdale, who was driving the unsteady Audi with his wife Kirsty and son Joey inside, was able to come to a stop. He then fearlessly stepped out into the road and saw the man was "barely breathing."
John's initial action caused others to come out and assist after other drivers simply ignored the vehicle occupying the fast lane. It was then discovered that the driver had experienced a seizure.
In a Facebook post, John described how he drove his Hyundai in front of the Audi, managed to stop the vehicle, and then jumped out to assist the man.
John described how he made frantic attempts to use his elbow to open the locked car before receiving assistance from a passing tradesman who gave his hammer to get access.
Then, more people came to assist, including a doctor on the opposite side of the M62 who drove to the following intersection, turned around, and then pushed through the backed-up traffic to reach the scene with a defibrillator.
Over 20,000 people have shared the social media post that detailed how John later received a call from Yorkshire Police notifying him that the man had experienced a seizure but was now stable and able to go back to his family's house.
John said: "I noticed the traffic slowing and it was bizarre because there was no reason why. I saw a car going slower than everyone else and people were just undertaking it.”
"I thought something wasn't right. He just carried on at 30mph and I was cursing him a bit at first thinking he was just daft.”
"When I looked in the car it was pretty horrific really. He was just grey and there was blood coming from his lips. He looked dead basically."
When the extraordinary occurrence happened, the father was traveling to Pontefract in West Yorkshire with his wife Kirsty, son Joey, 7, and a new kitten.
The car behind them crashed with them, sending his son, who was in the back, into a scream.
He said: "I told my wife to stay in the car. It is crazy now when I think about it but I just did it. Fortunately, people did slow down and the traffic did come to a standstill."
The tradesman assisted John by moving the driver's jaw backward, which allowed the man to take a gasp of breath and clear his airway.
Before paramedics arrived, a physiotherapist and a female police officer who was not on duty took up the first aid.
He said: "Everyone was amazing, it was a real team effort. I just want to emphasize that although I stopped the car it was a joint effort."
