‘Hidden’ Structures Discovered On The Far Side Of The Moon

It's true that nearly 60 years have passed since our initial landing on the celestial body, and scientists are continuously learning new things about it.

The most intriguing finding of the investigation was that there may be hidden structures on Earth's nearest neighbor.

It is believed that these structures are located on the 'far side' of the Moon, not the 'dark side,' so don't jump to the conclusion that the Decepticons actually landed on the space rock and we haven't been informed about it.

One side of the Moon is constantly pointed away from us due to its continuous orbital distance.

We have full moons and crescent moons as the moon more or less becomes visible because the dark part of the moon varies depending on the angle it's at on its orbit.

Now that this is all obvious, the discovery was made on the Moon's far side—that is, the side that is constantly facing away from us.

But the finds are of buildings buried far below the Moon's surface, not of fluffy, swanny-whistle-voiced creatures.

These could provide light on the Moon's geological past spanning billions of years, and their discovery was made possible by data gathered by China's Chang'e-4 rover.

Only roughly 40 meters could be reached below the surface with earlier models of Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR).

But now we have a far better understanding of the Moon's geological structure.

Journal of Geophysical Research: Planets released the study, which stated: “The GPR sends electromagnetic pulses into the lunar interior and receives echoes from subsurface layers. We use the high-frequency channel data to detect the structure of the upper 40m along the rover’s path, primarily consisting of rock debris and soil."

“Through this investigation, we have discovered multiple layers in the upper 300m, which likely indicate a series of basalt eruptions that occurred billions of years ago."

“The thickness variation of these lava flows suggests a decrease in eruption scale over time."

Thus, it's possible that the Moon formerly had volcanoes that erupted billions of years ago and released lunar lava. Amazing!

The "Giant Impact Hypothesis" is a theory that suggests the Moon formed when the Early Earth and a planet roughly the size of Mars impacted.

The comparable orbits of the Earth and Moon as well as the low amounts of metals in the Moon that are present in the Earth's core provide evidence for this.
