For those less fortunate than us, giving up what small treasures you have is almost impossible. Letting go of something you’ve worked so hard for is difficult for adults, so when you see it in a child it is heartwarming. That’s what young John Thuo showed us when he approached a car on the street in Nairobi, Kenya.

The young man's name is Thuo. One of three children who, along with his siblings, was kicked to the curb by his grandmother after his mother passed away and father walked out.
His grandmother was already taking care of six other children that belonged to another daughter who was also dead and chased Thuo and his siblings out of her home.

The six cousins left in the grandmother's care were being abused by their uncles. Street life was, sadly, a safer option for Thuo.
Thuo's father had remarried, but did not come for Thuo, and he did not know where he lived.

Thuo has lived on the streets most of his life. He begs for month daily in order to survive.
He struggles day to day, but is used to the life and is very street smart.

Then, he met Gladys. When he approached her car, he was surprised to find that she was surrounded by medical equipment. He asked her why, and her story brought tears to his eyes.
She has two collapsed lungs and needs to carry her oxygen equipment around in order to survive. No matter how hard his life was, he had never seen anyone have to struggle just to breathe every day.

Thuo gave all of his money that he had made for the day to Gladys and prayed with her.
When asked why he gave her all of his earnings for the day he said he did so because he felt that if he were in her place, more people would help him.

Gladys suffered a full lung collapse after suffering an assault at the hands of her husband. She was pregnant, and needed surgery after the attack forced a miscarriage. During surgery, a blood clot formed and also caused her to lose her sight.
After the her story spread across social media, people chipped in to help Gladys with her required surgeries. Over 8 million Kenyan shillings were raised (approximately 77,000 USD), more than she even needed.

Thuo was taken in by a children’s home and no longer has to beg for money on the street.
Though he may have to be relocated, he doesn’t want to be taken far from Gladys who he now calls mum.

It’s amazing how two people facing immeasurable odds can find each other and create something incredible.
In the case of Gladys and Thuo, it took one boy’s kind gesture and the generosity of thousands to save two souls and create a bond that will never be broken.
