What has the star of Here Comes Honey Boo Boo, Alana "Honey Boo Boo" Thompson, been up to since TLC canceled the show in 2014? As it turns out, the affable youngster has grown up quite a bit.
Honey Boo Boo Has Changed Drastically Over The Last Few Years
Scandal...and canceled
In October 2014, the Here Comes Honey Boo Boo empire came crashing down after TLC canceled the series after allegations that Thompson's mother, June "Mama June" Shannon, was dating a convicted child molester…who had allegedly molested her daughter, Anna when Anna was eight years old. At the time, TMZ reported that TLC had filmed a full season's worth of episodes, but chose not to air them for the sake of the children's welfare. "Supporting the health and welfare of these remarkable children is our only priority," the network said in a statement. "TLC is faithfully committed to the children's ongoing comfort and well-being." So what's been going on for the family since then?
Alana heads to a new school
In February 2015, a photo was posted to Alana's Facebook page that showed she was about to leave for her first day at a new school in Georgia. "She is excited and nervous," the caption read. Alana's sister, Lauryn 'Pumpkin' Thompson (pictured, right), returned to school months later after being homeschooled due to a reported brain injury.
The Doctors stage an intervention
During Mama June and Alana's appearance on the daytime health talk show The Doctors, the show expressed concern about Alana's health and weight. During the first of three episodes, it was revealed that Alana, then age 9, was 4'6" tall and 125 pounds, which the co-hosts classified as obese. Mama June tried to claim that Alana's weight was due to steroids she was taking for a number of pre-existing health conditions. The show's co-host quickly shot those claims down. "It's not her steroids that are causing her to be obese. It's the foods she's eating," Dr. Travis Stork said.
The show subsequently set up Alana with healthy prepared meals, a nutritionist, and cooking supplies, among other things, to help her lose 12 to 25 pounds. Subsequent check-ins and visits to the show alleged that the family had not been following through with their pledge. "We sent you all these kitchen tools to help you cook and they're still in the boxes, [they] haven't even been opened," Dr. Stork said in May 2015.
Mama June fights back
On the heels of their final appearance on The Doctors, Mama June posted to Instagram praising Alana's reported eight-pound weight loss over the span of a month. According to Mama June, Alana's weight loss was credited to "eating smaller portions and walking," along with the "encouraging support" from the family's personal trainer, Natasha Fett. In the post, Mama June also took aim at The Doctors, alleging that the show was edited to make them look bad and that it had wanted her family to fail.
Alana makes a rare red carpet appearance
A few months after Mama June's Instagram post, Alana made a rare red carpet appearance in her home state of Georgia. According to Extra, Alana was attending the opening of Love & Hip Hop: Atlanta star Benzino's new restaurant, Benzino's Crab Shack. Photos of Alana's dolled-up hairdo were posted the day before on Instagram. "Hair on fleek," the caption read.
Alana ends the summer on a high note
In September 2015, Alana and her family took in some music at the Gulf Coast Jam in Panama City, Florida. During the three-day festival, Alana snagged guitar picks from everyone from Lady Antebellum to Hunter Hayes and Dwight Yoakam. "I had a blast …" Alana said in a video posted to Instagram. "It's been amazing meeting all these new celebrities."
A rap career is launched
Jay-Z. Kanye West. Honey Boo Boo? In the fall of 2015, Alana bizarrely made an attempt at a career in music when she released her very first rap single, "Movin' Up." "I'm just a small-town girl," the song featuring Adam Barta and Pumpkin begins. "Living in my princess world. When rainy days give me the blues, I break out my dancing shoes!" A video for the rap single was also released and featured Alana's parents, Mama June and Mike "Sugar Bear" Thompson. There was also a lot of awkward dancing, which…we won't get into.
The Thompsons head to the fair
What's one way to celebrate your new career in rap music? By going to the local county fair, apparently. In October 2015, Mama June took to Twitter and posted a video montage of the Thompson family's recent trip to the Spalding County Fair in Griffin, GA. "The girl had a blast 4 the first time @ griffin fair," the tweet read. The accompanying 30-second montage showed highlights from their trip, including multiple photos of Alana looking like she was having a legitimate blast.
Alana gets fashionable for a good cause
Also in October, Alana lent her support to National Breast Cancer Awareness Month by rocking belts designed through C4 Belt's partnership with the National Breast Cancer Foundation. Alana was all smiles in the photos that were subsequently shared on social media.
Alana supports Mama June's return to TV
In November that year, it was announced that Mama June would be making her big return to reality television on a reality-themed edition of the WeTV series Marriage Boot Camp, alongside her ex, Sugar Bear, with whom she had reconciled after splitting in 2014. Alana came out in support of her family for the series' Los Angeles premiere that month, where she made headlines for her grown-up fashion. The 10-year-old arrived at the premiere in a black-and-white-striped dress, accompanied by a pearl necklace, fake eyelashes, and her signature personality.
Honey Boo Boo Stars...they're just like us
Typically, you'll find the Thompson family on sites like TMZ. But in January 2016, Mama June tweeted a photo of herself, Pumpkin and Alana purportedly about to get on the gossip site's famed tour bus. Whether or not they actually went on the tour remains to be seen; however, their cameo inevitably created a lot of fanfare, as evident by the passengers waving and taking photos from the bus behind them.
What's next for Alana?
Despite a scandal that shocked the nation and forced their show's cancellation, the Thompson family managed to weather the storm that was 2015 fairly well. Since then, they hinted that 2016 would bring more fame and fortune their way. Shortly after New Year's Day, Mama June wrote on Instagram that the family has "a few projects coming up" in 2016. Shortly thereafter, it was confirmed that she would appear on the plastic-surgery reality show Botched that year. Also that month, the family was photographed shopping in Beverly Hills, where they were accompanied by a film crew. It turns out that the crew was following them for Mama June's new reality show.
2017, the year of Mama June.
She kicked off the year with a reveal that she was rapidly losing weight thanks to surgery and exercise. A new show followed her struggles to get healthy and fit with the reveal of her new slim look at the end. Alana seems to have gotten the fitness bug too as she has made some very smart health choices since.
She had changed alot.
The past few years have shown this young lady change from a pudgy little-spoiled brat into a little diva in the making. Why the cameras were following them remains unclear. If 2015 was any indication, one thing remains crystal: Honey Boo Boo's probably here to stay.
