It turns out most of us may have been using fur-lined hoods the wrong way without even knowing it
A recent viral TikTok clip has sparked a debate online by claiming most of us have been wearing the hoods on our winter coats the wrong way for years.
The woman behind the video — along with plenty of people in her comments — suggests that many of us have unknowingly been making a simple mistake whenever we bundle up for warmth. Her explanation has left some viewers feeling a little silly about how they have been trying to stay warm.
Winter is now in full swing, Christmas is coming up fast, and everyone is layering up as they head outside. Warm coats with thick hoods are everywhere right now, especially the oversized ones meant to block out the cold air.
Chances are you either own a coat with a furry hood or have seen countless people wearing them. These hoods are designed to trap warmth around your head, but the viral video claims many of us are not taking advantage of the design the way it was intended.
Most people put the hood on with the fur facing outward, which is why the suggestion that this approach is wrong has caught so much attention.
In the clip, the woman starts off wearing her hood in the usual way, then explains step-by-step why she believes so many of us have been using it incorrectly without realizing it.
"Guys, you're wearing your coats wrong. Please stop wearing it like this," she urged, noting that the fur trim is not supposed to be a stylish extra but is meant to serve a useful purpose when it is worn the right way.
She then flips the hood inward, tucking the fur so that it sits on the inside against your head. From there, she explains how the design is actually meant to be used.
"You're supposed to fold it in like this and it covers your ears and it blocks air. You zip your coat all the way to the top and it blocks air from coming in and you stay so, so, so much warmer."
She also explained that wearing the hood the usual way leaves small gaps that let cold air hit your face. This means you end up staying colder than you need to be, since the hood works more like a regular fabric hood rather than providing extra insulation.
The video has prompted a wide discussion across social media, with some users posting pictures of Inuit parkas and other cultural examples that show fur being worn on the outside to protect the face from wind and snow.
One person highlighted the style element by saying: "I'm in New York not Antarctica, gotta stay fly," while another viewer reacted with confusion and asked: "Wait… we've all been doing it wrong this whole time?"
A different user commented: "Our ancestors did it wrong too if that's what she meant," and someone else chimed in to explain: "No, the fur is ment to break the wind before it hits your face."
"I did this as a kid and kept doing it because it worked. It's amazing that so many people didn't know this feature," one viewer revealed, pointing out that this method has actually been useful for them for years.
In the end, like with most fashion choices, the decision is really up to you and depends on what you prefer.
Folding the fur inward may keep you warmer on cold days, but if you love the look of the fur framing your hood, then go for it — as long as you are staying comfortable in the cold.
