The discovery was made on a Baltimore bus.
A bus driver's workday took an unsettling turn when he found a fetus on one of the bus seats.
While driving south on Baltimore's Green Route on June 1, the driver stumbled upon this disturbing find.
The discovery was made on a Maryland Transit Administration bus at about 12:39 pm as it arrived at the 2500 block of Kirk Avenue in East Baltimore.
He immediately contacted the Baltimore Police Department, which initiated an investigation.
Footage of the bus being inspected was circulated on social media, prompting users to describe the event as 'sad' and 'awful'.
A police spokesperson conveyed to The US Mirror:
"I can confirm that on June 1, 2024, at approximately 12:39 p.m. in the 2500 block of Kirk Avenue, an MTA bus driver advised that he discovered a fetus on a seat on the bus.
"MTA police and BPD officers responded. As this is an open and active investigation, no further information is available at this time."
Little information about the fetus is available, and no suspects have been identified so far.
This incident occurred shortly after a placenta and umbilical cord were discovered in trees near Cooks River at Earlwood in southwest Sydney.
Following that discovery, which was made by a couple walking their dogs, there were widespread calls for the mother to contact government welfare programs for support.
Police are now actively searching for the mother and baby involved in that case.
As of now, no one has been located.
Tests on the found organs confirmed they were human and established that the baby was male, according to police reports.
While finding a fetus is rare, the abandonment of newborns is not unheard of.
In the year 2021 alone, 31 babies in the US were found in dumpsters or abandoned in backpacks. Out of these, 22 were discovered deceased.
There has been a rise in the establishment of Safe Havens where parents can safely leave their unwanted babies.
These Safe Havens are found in places like hospitals, fire stations, churches, adoption agencies, and emergency service buildings.
The National Safe Haven Alliance reports that since 1999, 4,524 babies have been left at Safe Havens.
During the same period, 1,610 babies were abandoned illegally, with 608 found alive and 915 found deceased.
