Horrifying Footage Shows People Trapped Vertically 160ft Up On Rollercoaster In Spain
Terrified rollercoaster riders were left stuck in the air for over an hour after the ride malfunctioned. They were left trapped vertically at around 50 metres height in 37C heat.
The ‘Abismo’ ride in the Parque de Atracciones in Madrid, Spain, suffered an issue that left at least ten theme park goers stuck on Wednesday, August 3.
A technical failure left passengers trapped in the rollercoaster car, pointing vertically upwards at the very top of the ride.
The ride broke down just after 9pm, not long before the park was due to shut for the day. As the rest of the park shut around them and night fell they hung there for around an hour until it was possible to bring visitors down safely, according to el Diario .
Emergency services were not brought in to get them down. And just to make matters worse, temperatures in Madrid reached 37ºC that day, leaving them hanging in scorching heat. The park opened as normal the next day. Thankfully no injuries were reported, Spanish News Today confirmed.
Parque de Atracciones has said its rides are all checked daily and they have the necessary security protocols in place. Wednesday’s malfunction was reportedly down to a specific technical failure according to El Mundo.
The ‘Abismo’ or Abyss ride is one of the park’s most “exclusive” rides and billed as one of the most “spectacular” of its kind worldwide, plummeting backwards from a 160ft height, reaching speeds of 105km per hour.
The park's website says Abismo offers a 'great adrenaline rush', adding: "This ride will make you feel incredible sensations along its route.
"Along the way, Abismo will trace shapes in the air such as corkscrews, rises or inversions, which you’ll experience from within.
"The greatest impact will be at the end of the route, because you’ll ascend to the rollercoaster tower, but this time you’ll fall backwards."
But this time it didn't fall backwards.
