Police previously claimed the girl had run towards them wearing tactical gear.
In a deeply tragic event that shook California, a teenage girl kidnapped by her father was fatally shot by police in a case of mistaken action during a rescue attempt.
This heartbreaking incident unfolded on September 27, 2022, when authorities were alerted about 15-year-old Savannah Graziano, who was reportedly taken by her father, 45-year-old Anthony John Graziano.
The situation was even more dire as Anthony was suspected of murdering Savannah's mother, Tracy Martinez, just the day before.
The police chase that followed ended dramatically on the side of a freeway in Hesperia, about 80 miles east of Los Angeles, where law enforcement managed to stop the vehicle.
During the intense chase, shots were fired from the vehicle at the pursuing officers.
Helicopter footage that later emerged provided a clearer picture of the tragic sequence of events that led to the deaths of both Anthony and Savannah Graziano.
The video showed a shootout between the police and Anthony Graziano.
During the chaos, Savannah was seen exiting the vehicle with her hands raised before she lay on the ground.
She is then observed standing up and walking slowly towards the police, who were positioned behind a patrol car, before tragically being shot by the officers.
Savannah was declared deceased after being taken to a local hospital.

"The suspect vehicle comes to rest at which a subject exits the passenger side of the vehicle wearing tactical gear," he said in a press conference.
"That subject starts to run towards Sheriff's deputies and during the gunfire goes down. Sheriff's deputies immediately go to clear the vehicle, make it safe and render medical aid."
Newly released audio from the scene, captured not over the police radio but on a deputy's belt recorder, sheds light on the moments leading up to the shooting.
"Passenger, get out! Passenger, get out," an officer is heard saying.
As bullets continue to be fired, the deputy tries to guide Savannah.
"Come here. Come to me, come to me," he urges.
"Come, come, come, come. Walk, walk, walk, walk. Hey, Stop! Stop shooting her. He's in the car. Stop," the audio tragically ends, revealing the officers' realization of the mistake too late.
