How To Undo The Horrible Damage From Sitting All Day

The human body wasn't designed to sit all day.

Your body was made for moving, and if you've got a desk job, you're probably doing some damage. You've got a relatively high chance of developing certain musculoskeletal disorders, not to mention the life-threatening blood clots.

What's more, you can't just reverse the effects of sitting by exercising.

According to a study in the Annals of Internal Medicine, exercise alone doesn't prevent all of the damage. So, what should you do?

First, treat it as a serious problem.

Prevention is, of course, the best medicine. If you can afford a standing desk (or even better, an adjustable desk), the investment will pay huge dividends down the line.

If you can't do that, take frequent breaks.

Simple, right? Break every 30 minutes or so and walk around for a bit. Squats and stretches are also a big help. Use a timer to remind yourself to take breaks; otherwise, you won't take them.

Work out your core.

This will help you to avoid back pain. Focus on strengthening your abs and back; pull-ups are a great exercise to try when you're off the clock.

Stretch your hips.

Do wide leg swings to stretch out your hips after you've been sitting for a while. Hip lefts are also helpful. While you rarely think about the muscles in your hips, they're an important part of your body's support system, and they can help to prevent back pain.

Finally, sit properly.

Get an office chair with adjustable arms and adjust them so that you're not laying your arms on them while you're working. Keep your back straight and your core firm. While this won't feel comfortable at first, you'll get used to it quickly...and your body will thank you!
