u/RoadIsland123 told readers that she had been saving up for a special two-week vacation with her husband when his mother asked if she could join them. She declined because the trip was supposed to be a bonding experience for the couple, and the Redditor had paid for it.

“[His mother] called, texted, sent people to talk [me] into letting her come, even threatened to call the police and make some complaint up to get us to stay if she can’t come,” she wrote. “My husband said we should just take her.”

Her husband tried to issue an ultimatum, claiming he wouldn't go on the trip if his mother couldn't, but when she stood firm, he relented.

Or so she thought.

The original poster was shocked and horrified to find her mother-in-law waiting for them at the airport with her luggage. It quickly became clear that her husband had been involved in this selfish attempt to back his wife into a corner, and rather than go along with it; the Redditor simply went home.

"He tried to say I was overreacting and that his mom was there 'anyway' and I should let it go and not mess the trip up for us. I told him he and his mom could still go and that I was going home," she explained.

Worse, when her husband eventually followed her home rather than going on the trip, he didn't seem to understand what he had done wrong, insisting that she had overreacted.

Redditors were outraged by both the mother and son's childish and manipulative behavior.

While Redditors helped the OP see that the blame for this massive disaster falls evenly on her husband and his mother's shoulders, he hasn't been able to see it that way.

She claims that he continued to blame her for the missed vacation after trying to talk things out, so she decided to take her dog and leave.

"In that moment and seeing how he was still not even anywhere near understanding what he has done just…made things perfectly clear to me," she wrote. "I just had pictured years and years of my life being lived like that, and I was like no…I can't do it."

OP stated after reading the comments on her Reddit post "All these people's opinions, advice and concerns were like a spark...like the wake up call I really needed. Though I wish that it didn't get this far but what's done is done."

She also said, "A big thank you to those who reached out with resources that I feel very very lucky to have come across. Just wanted to give you an update since many of you asked for it."

The ball is now in the husband's court, and he can either deal with his drama or continue to play the victim. But, in any case, the OP will not engage in any forced relationships with his overly involved mother.
