Woman shares salary with her TikTok followers to be fired 2 weeks after landing new job. NDA. Who’s she?
Lexi Larson of Denver was ecstatic when she had landed an amazing job in the tech industry. She was so excited that she quit her job and took to her TikTok to announce to her followers in a celebratory post which also shared her pay bump.
After signing on to her job, she was made to sign a few legal papers along with her contract. This included an NDA or a Non-Disclosure agreement where she agreed not to share private and sensitive company data.
While Lexi had shared an NDA, federal laws dictate that employed legally have a right to share salary information.
Soon after she shared her $40k increase on TikTok, she was called into the office where her superiors said to cut it out.
“Even though I’m very aware that talking about salary is federally protected, you can’t get fired for that, I did take all of those videos down just because, you know, they were my employer and I didn’t want them to be mad at me or not like me or something.
Although Lexi had already taken the offending videos down, she was called back two days later to be fired and sent home.
She asked very specifically if she had broken any laws or policies, “Have I broken any policies? Have I posted anything on TikTok that is a security concern?”
Although the admitted that she hadn’t, her employer said that while she hadn’t broken any policies yet, they couldn’t take the risk for the future.
Luckily Lexi was able to reach out to her previous employer who was very understanding of her situation and allowed her to get her job back.
Commenters sympathised with her situation,
"I'm so sorry to hear this but glad that your previous employer was so kind! I don't know anything about emplyer laws but this doesn't sound right!!!"
In fact, a lawyer commented to let her know she might have grounds for an unlawful termination case.
"I am a lawyer telling you to get a lawyer. That's potentially wrongful termination."
Another chimed in, "You should tak to an attorney. They literally told you they were mad about you sharing salary and then fired you as a result."
Lexi had four weeks until she rejoined her old place so in the meantime, she just made funny TikToks about her situation.
