The rapper attended the premiere after contributing an original song to the movie
Rapper Ice Spice has come under heavy criticism following her appearance at the New York City screening of The SpongeBob Movie: Search For SquarePants, with her outfit quickly becoming a talking point online.
Social media lit up after the rapper arrived wearing a white lace Blumarine dress that many described as very sheer, drawing immediate attention as photos from the event began circulating.
Almost right away, some people questioned her styling choice, with critics arguing that the 25-year-old’s look did not match the family-friendly tone of a movie premiere aimed primarily at children.
One Instagram user wrote: "Dressed like that at a kids premiere is so INSANE!!"
Another added: "Are we just going to ignore the 'kids' premiere."
A third asked bluntly: "Where did she think she was going?"
Someone else commented: "So inappropriate to wear to a kids movie event."
Despite the criticism, Ice Spice also received support from fans who praised her look, with one person writing: "I'm obsessed."
Another fan added: "No other rap girl serving like Ice Spice right now."
Making a playful nod to SpongeBob lore, one commenter joked: "She took the words 'bikini bottom' real serious."
Ice Spice attended the premiere not just as a guest, but because she voices a minor character in the film and also contributed an original song titled Big Guy to the soundtrack.
The rapper has also been open about being a SpongeBob fan, and even released a track called Bikini Bottom on her debut album in 2023.
During a recent appearance on The Kelly Clarkson Show, Ice Spice spoke about the process behind creating music for The SpongeBob Movie and how much work went into it.
Ice Spice said: "This was probably the hundredth draft, probably, that finally made it out - that you guys are hearing."
"The whole premise of the film is about SpongeBob becoming, like, a 'big guy' and so I had to really incorporate that phrase throughout the song. It all turned out to really work out in the end and I'm just happy that it took this many drafts because it's my favourite one."
The movie arrives in US theaters today, December 19, and will be released in the UK tomorrow, December 20, following SpongeBob as he tries to prove himself as a “big guy” to Mr. Krabs.
The film is directed by Derek Drymon, with Tom Kenny, Clancy Brown, Rodger Bumpass, Bill Fagerbakke, and Carolyn Lawrence returning to voice the beloved characters in what aims to be a fun and engaging kids movie.
At the time of writing, the film holds an 85 percent critics score on Rotten Tomatoes.
