A perfectly camouflaged marksman is aiming at you and ready to pull the trigger anywhere in this hillside landscape.

Artist Simon Menner was allowed permission to see snipers in action with the troops of Germany, Latvia, and Lithuania, as seen in the shot.

It depicts a mountain with trees and shrubs, as well as a nearly invisible soldier taking up a position with a high-powered gun.

If you look closely, you may just make out a portion of his telescopic sight, which is the only indication of his whereabouts.

A sniper's training includes learning to blend in with the environment as well as learning to hit a target from a mile away.

They must be able to survive in hostile terrain alone or in pairs, digging holes for refuge.

And they must be ready when the time comes to strike - all without being seen.

Simon spent six years following snipers on training drills to depict their amazing ability to blend in with their surroundings.

He observed them assisting each other in the creation of their "ghillie suits," which were made from natural elements such as leaves and dead grass to complement each scene.

His Disappearing Act series of images, which range from sunny meadows to fog-shrouded mountains, appear to be tranquil and sometimes ominous landscapes at first glance.

A sharpshooter with his gun focused directly at the camera lurks in every shot.

The shooter is only 30 feet away in several photographs, including the one on this page, but he is still difficult to identify.

In reality, the sniper would be at least a quarter-mile away from the target, with no possibility of seeing them.

Looking for a hint? Look at the huge bush in the image's center-left corner.

You can just make out a flash of the metal rifle sight if you look closely from behind.

In the image, the sniper is circled.
