The tunnel was named after the landowner, Edward Sensabaugh, who constructed the tunnel in the 1920s when a railroad passed through his property and he needed a shortcut through the hill to get to the back of his land where the small lake is located.

Legend has it that Mr. Sensabaugh went mad one night and brutally murdered his wife and baby daughter, tossing them into the lake beside the tunnel. They say for the rest of his life, he visited the tunnel to remember them and that his ghost haunts the entrance to this day. Area residents believe ghosts guard the entrance to the tunnel.

Visits have reported that if you dare drive your car into the tunnel and turn it off, it will not turn back on. When you look into your rearview mirror, the ghostly image of Mr. Sensabaugh appears and lurks towards your car. They say just as he is about to reach you, the car will suddenly power on as if to give you a final opportunity to leave.

But it's not just the ghost of Mr. Sensabaugh that brave visitors have to worry about. The cry of his baby daughter can sometimes be heard inside the tunnel or just outside in the murky waters. Some claim to have heard the ghostly scream of a woman, which could belong to his wife.

Mr. Sensabaugh had a hobby of imitating wild animals, and people say that the sounds of animals that would not be near the water or tunnel can be heard there nightly.
