Incredible footage has begun circulating on social media showing the night sky light up due to a meteor.
On Saturday (May 19th), thousands were treated to an extraordinary display in the sky after a huge meteor made its appearance during the night.
Space always holds some surprises, and occasionally, it puts on a real show for those of us on Earth.
Particularly in Portugal or Spain this past Saturday, you might have caught sight of a striking glimmer breaking through the night sky.
What made it even more spectacular was that it happened at night, and the meteor’s brightness momentarily turned night into day.
In today’s digital age, plenty of people were filming just as the meteor streaked across the sky.
Loads of these videos have started popping up all over social media.
One such video captured a woman driving; her car’s dashcam recorded the meteor lighting up the sky brilliantly.
Another video caught a young girl dancing outside when suddenly a meteor blazed overhead, casting a light blue glow.
Yet another video featured someone filming an outdoor party when suddenly the meteor came into view.
Initial reports suggest that this brilliant blue flash could be seen streaking across the sky for hundreds of miles.
Collin Rugg, co-owner of Trending Politics, remarked: "This is insane."
He continued: "At the moment, it has not been confirmed if it hit the Earth’s surface however some reports say it may have fallen near the town of Castro Daire. Other reports say it was closer to Pinheiro."
The mentioned locations are about 200 miles apart.
On X, users expressed their awe.
One user commented: "Portugal is so beautiful that it deserves those sparkling flashes of light, lighting up its sky."
Another shared: "They look pretty, but that kind of reminds me of the one that went over Russia. But that one blew out all the windows. They look pretty, but they're very dangerous."
A third recounted: "Saw this happen in person once. It was dark that night, and then suddenly it was like someone flipped on all the lights at once. Truly surreal to watch the night sky light up like the sun just came out in an instant."
A skeptic pointed out: "Same month as the aurora borealis. Why are all these once in a lifetime events happening so close to each other? Makes you wonder if the solar eclipse was a warning."
Meanwhile, footage from the European Space Agency (ESA) captured the meteor lighting up the sky above Caceres, Spain, in shades of blue and green.
ESA described the event as a "stunning meteor" traveling at about 1,700mph.
Later, they clarified that the object was a "small piece of a comet" and not a meteor.
ESA also added: "The likelihood of any meteorites being found is very low."
It is believed that the comet burned up over the Atlantic Ocean after creating the breathtaking spectacle.
NASA explained that the presence of magnesium in such comets is what produces the blue-green color as they burn upon entering the Earth’s atmosphere.
In one video, a girl inadvertently filmed the incredible moment the sky flashed blue while she was hanging out with friends.
As she looked up in awe, her friends could be heard exclaiming ‘My God’ and ‘Merda’ in Spanish, stunned by the once-in-a-lifetime astronomical event.
