This is the heartstopping moment a circus performer held a blade between his teeth as he fed a lion during a big top trick.

Mohamed Sayed Elhelwe shocked the audience with the stunt during a performance of the National Circus in Mersa Matruh, west of Alexandria in Egypt.

Wearing an embroidered black jacket, the animal trainer could be seen sweating under the lights as his face came within inches of the lion's razor-sharp teeth.

He could later be seen using two sticks to force the lion to perform a number of tricks within a caged area in the middle of the tent.

The Egyptian National Circus opened its doors in 1966 on the Nile banks of Agouza and it still puts on two shows a day, six days a week.

Shows often include performances involving tigers, crocodiles, monkeys and bears. One of the circus acts involves two people going into a cage with 10 lions.
