You know what they say, "Till death or divorce do us part." except they never say the second part out loud. For OP it seemed his marriage was going in the same direction after his wife made an unforgivable comment comparing him to her now-deceased previous husband.

OP said they had been married for three years and had a young child. His wife had been previously married and had been a widow for two years before the two met.

During an argument, that he says became 'ugly', his wife told him that he preferred her ex-husband over him.

Beyond the phrasing, what crushed OP was the emotion in her voice when she expressed the sentiment to him. While she apologized later, OP could not shake the hurt.

OP said that he felt like a 'substitute' and that this was the first time she had been this cruel to him.

OP was ready to file for a divorce if this pattern persisted.

Yet they were willing to give it a chance if the marriage could still be salvaged.

That's when they took to Reddit to ask for other perspectives on the matter.

One commenter said that they had been in a similar situation where their wife had said something cruel. They too had made the decision to forgive and move on but that a shadow had been cast over their marriage because of the comment.

OP replied and said that they wanted to continue the relationship and were considering couples therapy to help them navigate the situation.

Another widower chimed in and let OP know that the wife's comment was in no way acceptable.

For others, it truly was the worst thing that could have been said.

One asked what the argument was even about if it got that bad.

OP said that the two were disagreeing on politics when things took a vicious turn.
