Bill Gates is one of, if not the richest man on the planet and despite his many, many philanthropies, a man still gets to indulge, right?
The Gates family home is 66,000 square feet and named Xanadu 2.0 after the fictional home of the main character in the film Citizen Kane. Being that it’s Bill Gates’ home, it of course is loaded will all manner of ridiculously cool tech.
#1. The house insulates itself:
Xanadu 2.0 is "an earth-sheltered house" which means it's built into its surroundings and allows the house (yeah, the house) regulate its own temperature.
#2. Like how each room changes to match guests temperature and lighting preferences, it’s like a scene out of AntiTrust:
Gates gives each of his guests a pin which interacts with sensors all over the house. As the guest moves through the house, the room's settings change to match the guest's preference. It will even change the music so it follows you from room to room.
#3. The pool has underwater speakers:
If you're tired of having pool parties in which you lose the sound of the music when you dip your head underwater, Bill Gates seems to have solved that problem. All 60 feet of swimming pool is located in the building above and is an indoor/outdoor pool. Guests can swim under a glass partition inside and end up outside on the terrace.
#4. You can put up any painting you want, whenever you want:
Gates has about $80,000 worth of computer screens set up around his house which can download and store just about any artwork or photograph you'd want.
#5. Gates has his own indoor trampoline room for the Cirque Du Soleil lover in all of us:
This is just an idea of what we think that room looks like, there aren't any photos of it.
#6. Worried about catering, don’t. He’s got 6 full kitchens.
Plenty of food.
#7. He’s also got a reception hall worth of any moderately-sized wedding:
It seats 150 people and has a 6 foot fireplace and a 22 foot video screen.
Wor
#8. Bill Gates owns a Leonardo da Vinci manuscript known as the Codex Leicester which he paid $30 million for:
He keeps it in his 2100 square foot library.
#9. He’s got a bat cave:
Well kind of, it's an underground cave/garage which can park 10 cars. But it's got concrete which "was purposely broken to give it a rough, deconstructivist look" AKA bat cave.
#10. All of the sand on the beach on his beach was imported from the Caribbean for that authentic feel:
Of course he has his own beach.
#11. He’s also got a favorite tree on the grounds, and it’s monitored 24/7:
It's a 40 year old maple tree and if it gets too dry it's automatically watered.
#12. A Microsoft employee paid $35,000 to tour the house:
I wonder if he thought maybe he was paying this employee too much.
We're sure that the technological advances in the house are continuing to evolve with the industry, as it stands it truly is a smart house!
