Jennifer Lawrence has opened up about the reason she decided to give up her dog after becoming a mother.

The Hunger Games actor welcomed her first son, Cy, in 2022 with her husband, Cooke Maroney, and the couple later had a second baby boy toward the end of 2024.

Long before her relationship with the art gallery director began in 2018, Lawrence had adopted a Chihuahua that became a big part of her life.

The dog, named Princess Pippi Longstocking, lived with Lawrence for several years, and although she no longer has the dog at home, the separation has remained within the family.

The Die My Love actor shared an update about the pup while promoting the psychological drama, which stars her alongside Robert Pattinson.

The topic of dogs likely came up because in Die My Love, Lawrence plays a struggling new mom whose inattentive husband, played by Pattinson, brings home a dog without asking and leaves her to care for it.

Lawrence reassured fans that Princess Pippi is “alive,” explaining that the dog now lives with her parents.

During a Q&A for the film on January 7, captured in social media footage, Lawrence said her dog simply was not suited to life in New York.

"I lived on 1st and 67th just to be near the park for her. After I had a kid, dogs became so scary," the 35-year-old shared.

Speaking in New York City, Lawrence continued by explaining how her perspective shifted after becoming a parent: "My son's going up to it and it's almost like I don't recognise dogs right now."

"I just see them as a threat. One of them bit my son and that just made me want to obliterate every dog ever."

She then joked that her mindset has changed so much that she now feels like saying: "I'm gonna take out you and your f**king family. You and your friends. I'm gonna go to China and take care of your friends over there. Anyone who looks like you is dead."

Although Princess Pippi no longer lives with her, Lawrence still has another pet named Fred and says she continues to have a soft spot for animals.

"I have a cat and I feel like they're so misunderstood," Lawrence said. "They are assholes and people who don't like that about cats are getting that that is what is so funny."

The actor has previously spoken candidly about the emotional weight of motherhood during a Variety Actors on Actors interview with Viola Davis.

"Every day of being a mom, I feel awful. I feel guilty," she explained.

"I'm playing with him and I'm like, 'Is this what he wants to be doing? Should we be outside? We're outside. What if he's cold? What if he's going to get sick? Should we be inside? Is this enough? Is this developing your brain enough?'"
