Put down that textbook and pick up a pack of cigarettes? That seems to be the message from former Top Gear presenter Jeremy Clarkson, who recently made headlines with his controversial comments on education.
Jeremy Clarkson, known for his controversial statements, has once again caused a stir by suggesting that school should be a place for “smoking and having sex” instead of solely focusing on academic studies.
In his latest comments, the former Top Gear star argued that students are burdened with excessive pressure to excel in exams.
Despite being a public figure and a successful television personality, Clarkson himself didn’t excel academically.
At 63, he still carries the badge of flunking his A-levels and admitting to not revising for them. Some argue that his lack of academic achievements contributes to his controversial views on education.
In Clarkson's opinion, the emphasis on swotting instead of bonking is doing youngsters no good.
Jeremy said: “I tell this story to kids, hoping they’ll realise that school is for smoking and sh***ing, not swotting. But they all have it in their heads that without four A*s and a first from Oxford, they’re going to spend their lives endlessly asking customers if they’ve ever been to a Harvester before.”
He continued: “This makes them all unbelievably stressy. If you then throw the teachers strike into the mix, you end up with what we must now call a ‘mental health epidemic’.”
“Exam results only really matter if you want to be a doctor or a lawyer and you need to be professionally qualified. I employed a chap on the farm last month and never looked at how he’d done at school or if he’d been to uni.”
Clarkson explained that he “took him on” just because he “liked his shoes”.
Jeremy Clarkson, the star of Amazon Prime’s “Clarkson's Farm," found himself in a bit of a controversy with Carol Vorderman, the host of the popular TV show Countdown.
In a recent column titled "Me thinks Carol doth protest too much," he referred to Vorderman as "awfully shouty" and an "anti-Tory, anti-sleaze warrior."
He criticized Vorderman for using the term “disgusted” to describe her feelings towards MPs.
Following Carol Vorderman’s recent address at the Women and Equalities Select Committee, where she spoke about women’s challenges during menopause, Jeremy Clarkson made a sarcastic remark.
Additionally, Vorderman criticized Maria Caulfield, the Minister for Women’s Health, for not showing up and speaking about such topics.
Jeremy made a remark about Carol’s use of the term “absolutely disgusted” in his recent column.
He wrote: “That’s a bit strong because if you’re ‘absolutely disgusted’ by someone who disagrees with you about the menopause, then how do you describe your feelings towards a Russian soldier who’s just lobbed a hand grenade into a school?”
After Clarkson’s comments, Vorderman took to social media to call him out for “having a go at a woman again.” She then went on to assert that she would continue to feel disgusted, whether or not he approved.
Indeed, Jeremy Clarkson never fails to stir up controversy with his unapologetic opinions. Regardless of whether you agree with him or not, he certainly knows how to make headlines and get people talking. It will be interesting to see what he has to say next come exam results day.
