As Christmas approaches, the iconic "Grinch" movie, celebrating its 23rd year, sparks rumors of a sequel starring Jim Carrey. While details remain unconfirmed, fans await official word from Carrey and Universal Pictures.
A few weeks remain till Christmas, and many people have already begun putting up and showcasing their decorations.
And there's no better way to get into the holiday spirit than to rewatch the greatest Christmas movies as December approaches.
The Grinch, or How the Grinch Stole Christmas as it is officially known, is one of the most well-known holiday favorites.
Having been released in 2000, the film directed by Ron Howard is celebrating its 23rd Christmas this year.
I'm not sure what would age you more if that doesn't.
When The Grinch, starring Jim Carrey as the green goblin himself, was first released at the beginning of the year, it garnered a mixed response.
But with time, it turned into a true Christmas favorite.
Although there has never been a sequel to the movie, we might not have to wait for too many more Christmases for more Grinch action if rumors from earlier this year are to be believed.
Giant Freakin Robot revealed earlier this year that Carrey will be playing The Grinch again in an upcoming sequel.
The publication wrote: "Jim Carrey is returning to Universal Pictures for The Grinch 2, once again playing Dr. Seuss’s most famous and ill-tempered creation."
The February 2023 report provided no details regarding the plot of The Grinch sequel or the potential reunion of other stars from the 2000 movie.
Notably, since the claims first surfaced, neither Carrey nor Universal Pictures have commented on them.
Since Carrey has never been a huge admirer of sequels, fans will be a little surprised if he does return for The Grinch 2.
Speaking to CinemaBlend in 2017, the actor said: “I find sequels are a function of commerce for the most part. At least the two I've done, they were characters I enjoyed doing, but I did find myself almost parroting myself at that point.”
"When you put 10 years between you and the last time you did it, suddenly you're going, 'How did I do that again?'... So, you're imitating your original inspiration. It was super fun with Jeff, but I'm not a crazy sequel guy."
Carrey is undoubtedly picking up his roles more carefully these days, so playing the Grinch again might not be at the top of his priority list.
Carrey said that the Christmas movie part was a "challenge" in an interview with Empire in 2022.
"It was all just: a challenge,” he said. “ And at a certain point, it got past that, and hopefully from everything that everyone is telling me, it got to the point where you saw the Grinch's soul."
After Sonic the Hedgehog 2 came out in April of last year, the Mask actor made an important announcement that he intended to "retire" from acting. He gave the explanation that he felt he had "done enough."
It comes after Jim advertised his nearly 30-year-old Los Angeles property, which he has called his "sanctuary," for an astounding $28.9 million earlier this year.
After first acquiring the opulent mansion in 1994, the 61-year-old Golden Globe winner told The New York Post in a statement that he was prepared for "changes" in his life.
