JoJo Siwa Opens Up About Her Evolving Identity After Saying She's Not A Lesbian

JoJo Siwa has opened up more deeply about her experience of coming out and how her understanding of her sexuality has grown over time. She shared that she once felt 'boxed in', a feeling that resurfaced recently after she confirmed her relationship with Chris Hughes.

The 22-year-old pop star revealed she’s now dating Chris Hughes, who was her fellow housemate on Celebrity Big Brother UK. The two connected during their time on the show earlier this year in April.

While still on the show, the Dance Moms alum had a heartfelt conversation with Danny Beard—winner of season four of RuPaul’s Drag Race UK. During the chat, JoJo mentioned that she doesn’t fully identify with the label 'lesbian'.

In the conversation with Beard, Siwa shared: "I feel so queer."

Beard responded by saying they also see themselves as queer, which encouraged Siwa to dive even deeper into her thoughts and feelings during their chat.

"I think I've always told myself I'm a lesbian," she said. "I think being here, I've realised I am not a lesbian, I'm queer. And I think that's really cool - I'm switching letters! I've dropped the L and I've gone to the Q, baby! That's what I love about sexuality."

At that point in time, Siwa—who has publicly identified as non-binary and embraces all pronouns—was in a relationship with Kath Ebbs. The two had recently gone public with their relationship earlier this year.

Now, in a more recent interview with the Daily Mail, she went into even more detail about how she came to terms with her identity. She also explained that there were times she felt pressure around how she should label her sexuality.

"When I came out at 17, I said: 'I'm pansexual, because I don't care'," Siwa said. "But then I kind of boxed myself in and I said: 'I'm a lesbian'. And I think I did that because of pressure."

According to her, that sense of 'pressure' came from some people within the LGBTQ+ community itself, which added to her confusion and inner conflict.

Siwa continued: "In a weird way, I think it came a little bit from inside the [LGBTQ+] community at times. From people I know, from partners I've had."

"You just get put in this world where you feel like, because you now have said, 'Oh, I'm a lesbian', you have to be a lesbian. And the truth is, sexuality is fluid."

This discussion began shortly after JoJo and Chris Hughes publicly confirmed that they were in a relationship.

Fans of Celebrity Big Brother had been speculating about their connection for months, especially after watching them grow closer on the show.

Earlier this month, the couple decided to go public with their romance.

Hughes shared a sweet moment on Snapchat, where he posted a bedroom photo of them snuggled together.

In the picture, he’s seen giving Siwa a gentle kiss on the forehead.

The 32-year-old captioned the cozy snap with: "Sleepinnn beauty."
