Joseph Williams met his partner at work.
Joseph Williams, hailing from Chicago, has had a life marked by unique challenges due to being born without a jaw, a condition medically referred to as otofacial syndrome.
This rare condition necessitated multiple surgeries from a very young age and presented not only physical hurdles but also significant mental health battles against societal prejudice and misconceptions.
Now 42, Joseph has navigated through life's ups and downs with resilience.
"People would never have expected me to get married," he shared, reflecting on the societal expectations that often underestimated his capacity for a normal life.
Yet, in 2020, Joseph defied these odds by marrying his partner, Vania, whom he met at work and developed a deep connection with over time.
Joseph's journey began under dramatic circumstances.
He was part of a twin pregnancy, but tragically, "the other baby passed away before [they] were born."
His arrival was a shock to his birth mother, leading to a series of events where, just days after being born, he was subjected to "multiple surgeries" in an attempt to construct a jaw for him.
Unfortunately, his body rejected these attempts, making the surgeries unsuccessful.
Amidst these early trials, Joseph was put up for adoption, marking the beginning of his lifelong navigation through unique challenges.
Growing up without a jaw was "hard," Joseph admits.
His daily routine includes blending his food and consuming it through a feeding tube directly into his stomach.
Additionally, a tube in his neck assists his breathing, and he communicates primarily through sign language, a skill he acquired at the age of two.
Yet, Joseph found innovative ways to express himself, such as writing notes and typing messages on his phone, further illustrating his determination to connect with others despite his condition.
Joseph's relationship with Vania blossomed from a workplace friendship into a loving partnership, culminating in their marriage in 2020.
"I'm sure people would never have expected me to get married. To be honest, I didn't think I would either," Joseph confessed.
However, his journey to finding love and companionship underscores his belief that he "deserved more" from life.
"Being born without a jaw has given me a different outlook on life and it has made me who I am today," he reflected.
Joseph and Vania recently celebrated their two-year wedding anniversary, a testament to their enduring bond and Joseph's unyielding spirit.
As he has aged, Joseph's self-acceptance has flourished.
He has embraced his unique identity, refusing to let his condition define or limit him.
Pursuing his passion for music, Joseph has become a DJ, using this platform as his voice.
His bio X states: "DJ'ing is my voice."
Joseph's message is clear: "I understand that I am different and that some people will think I am ugly and not accept me, but I am still a person who has a heart, feelings, and a brain."
"I should be treated with respect, just as anyone else should be."
He encourages open dialogue over judgment: "I'd rather people just come up to me and ask me questions, rather than staring or pointing," advocating for empathy and understanding in how we perceive and interact with those who are different from us.
