A man who shot and killed his father before decapitating him has now been sentenced, following the shocking revelation that the motive was tied to political tensions within the family.

According to reports, the incident happened in January of last year. The attacker, identified as Justin D. Mohn, took the life of his father, Michael F. Mohn, who had worked as an engineer in the geoenvironmental division of the US Army Corps of Engineers based in Philadelphia.

After committing the gruesome act, the 33-year-old, who was still living with his parents at the time, recorded and uploaded a deeply disturbing video to YouTube. The footage showed him holding his father’s severed head while making a series of extreme demands.

The horrifying 14-minute video, which Mohn titled 'Mohn's Militia - Call To Arms for American Patriots', included aggressive calls for federal workers to quit their jobs and demands to cancel the nation’s public debt, among several other extreme points.

Mohn, who lived in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, was officially sentenced on July 11. He received life in prison with no chance of parole for his crimes.

Judge Stephen Corr handed down two life sentences—one for first-degree murder and another for second-degree murder. On top of that, Mohn was found guilty of 10 additional charges, including terrorism and decapitation, for uploading the shocking video to the internet.

During the sentencing hearing, Judge Corr addressed the emotional devastation Mohn had caused his family, especially his parents. He emphasized that Mohn had been loved and supported without condition throughout his life.

"What you did to your mother is unspeakable." he told the court.

In addition to the life sentences, Mohn was also given a combined sentence of up to 40 years for the other charges filed against him.

Mohn said the killing was 'plan B' YouTube

Mohn later gave an explanation for why he committed the act and why he decided to share the video online. He claimed that he believed his father was trying to stop him from becoming a figure like Donald Trump. This, according to a report by the New York Post.

While testifying in court, Mohn explained that his political views were very different from those of his parents. He described his mom and dad as left-leaning and said he thought his father didn’t want him to rise to a leadership position in politics.

Despite the violence, Mohn told the court that he did not originally intend to kill his father. He claimed the shooting was his backup plan after his attempt to place his father under a so-called 'citizen's arrest' didn’t go as planned.

Mohn said he wanted to send a message to the government Bucks County District Attorneys Office

"Unfortunately, he resisted." he explained in court, adding: "I was hoping to perform a citizen's arrest on my father for, ultimately, treason." as reported by ABC News.

Mohn claimed that the situation escalated when his father tried to grab his 9mm handgun after allegedly threatening him. That’s when the confrontation spiraled out of control.

Responding to questions from his lawyer, Mohn said he ended up shooting his father while standing inside the bathroom of their home in Levittown.

"I unfortunately had to use deadly force." Mohn said to the court during his trial in Bucks County, Pennsylvania.
