A K-Pop celebrity recently found herself in the midst of a storm of fan outrage for simply being in a relationship.
Here in the Western part of the world, fans are often eager and excited to learn about the romantic escapades of their favorite musicians, sometimes going to great lengths to dig up the latest scoop online.
However, in places like South Korea, the cultural expectations are quite different.
K-pop agencies often market their stars as if they're romantically available, even to the extent that, particularly in Japan, it's not unusual to see 'no dating' clauses in the stars' contracts.
A mere ten years ago, it was pretty standard for K-pop agencies to prohibit new artists from dating or even owning a mobile phone.
Fast forward to 2024, while these restrictions may not be officially in place, admitting to a relationship can still cause quite a stir among K-Pop enthusiasts.
Case in point: Karina from the South Korean girl group Aespa recently felt compelled to issue a hand-written apology after it was revealed she's in a relationship with actor Lee Jae-wook.
Displeased fans went so far as to send a truck to SM Entertainment, the company behind Aespa, displaying a pointed message on an electronic sign, as reported by the South Korean newspaper Chosun Ilbo.
The sign broadcasted their disappointment with a message that was anything but subtle:
"Is the love to you by your fans not enough? Why did you choose to betray the fans? Please apologise directly. Otherwise, you will see a decrease in album sales and empty concert seats."
As the most followed member of Aespa on Instagram, boasting over 12 million followers, Karina, whose real name is Yu Ji-min, took to the platform to address her fans directly.
"I apologise for surprising you greatly. I know very well how disappointed [my fans] who have supported me are and how upset you're thinking about the memories we shared together," she wrote.
She continued with a vow to her fans, saying: "I want to make up for my hurt fans from now on. I have always been sincere to you, and still each and every one of you are truly precious to me."
Karina didn't stop there, as she pledged to "show more maturity and work harder going forward to all [my fans] without disappointment."
This isn't the first time a K-Pop idol has been caught up in a whirlwind of controversy for dating.
Back in 2018, Cube Entertainment's stock took a nosedive when news broke that two of its top artists, Hyuna and E-Dawn, were a couple.
Despite the backlash, not all of Karina's fans think she did anything wrong.
Some of her Instagram followers have shown support for her relationship.
"Apologise for loving someone? You don't need to do this, you deserve to be happy," one supporter commented.
Another questioned, "Why?? need to apologize when you did nothing wrong?? Loving someone is normal!"
And yet another fan added their voice of support: "You didn't do anything wrong you can live your life in peace if we can date you can too and you are free to live 💗💓those who have excuses and hate don't care Karina"
