In Kentucky, a man had to quickly stop at a gas station with only $40. He used up all his money to buy fuel, leaving him with just $20 worth in his tank. But surprisingly, he ended up leaving with over half a million dollars.
Kentucky Man Runs Out Of Gas And Wins $1M On Lottery Ticket At Gas Station As He Stops For Fuel
Michael Schlemmer was down to his last gallon of gas, he made an unexpected pit stop at the Convenient Food Mart along US Highway 25, as he explained to lottery officials.
“I ran out of gas, and I coasted in there,” he recalled.
Having $40 in his pocket, he used $20 to fuel his vehicle and utilized the remaining amount to purchase a lottery ticket.
After scratching off his $20 ticket, he uncovered the symbol indicating that he had won an astonishing $1 million.
Schlemmer explained: "I scratched it off, and I looked at it and went back in the store.”
"I showed the girls that sold it to me, and they about had a fit.”
“The owners of the store were there and they both started grinning.”
According to the Kentucky Lottery, the Convenient Food Mart is set to receive $8,620 as a result of selling the winning ticket.
Schlemmer mentioned that he wouldn't fully grasp how lucky he was until he actually held the check in his hands.
"Nothing went through my mind,” he said. “I just got up and went back in the store and showed it to them store clerks.”
"Until I get the check in my hand, I don't believe it.”
The $20 ticket that he bought was from the $1,000,000 Luck game. In this game, players need to scratch off a specific area on the ticket. If the symbols on the ticket match the numbers in both the "your numbers" and "winning numbers" sections, they win.
Or when a player scratches the ticket and discovers a pot of gold symbol, they are automatically awarded a predetermined amount, such as the $1 million that Schlemmer won in his case.
Instead of receiving $50,000 per year for twenty years, Schlemmer chose to take the lump sum of $862,000. After taxes were deducted, he received a check for $616,330.
Even before his unexpected fortune, Schlemmer had his sights set on buying a new car. Now, with his newfound wealth, he intends to use a portion of the money for the vehicle and save the rest.
Sharing his excitement, he said: "I told the dealership I'm waiting for a big check to come in, and then I hit that."
Earlier this year, a kind-hearted lottery winner made a remarkable announcement. They decided to donate their entire jackpot to charity. The winner, who preferred to stay anonymous, had won $150,000 in the Powerball draw held on January 16.
Even though the winner was just one number away from winning the huge grand prize of $416 million (or $224.9 million as a lump sum), they chose to keep their identity a secret. Instead of enjoying the attention, they decided to give away the money to help others in need.
What an incredibly kind-hearted person.
