Lindsay Lohan had previously made threats of legal action against the creators of the popular video game Grand Theft Auto V, alleging that one of the in-game characters was modeled after her.
Lindsay Lohan Tried To Sue Rockstar Games For Character That Looked Like Her
Lindsay Lohan once tried to sue Rockstar Games, claiming that they had used her likeness in Grand Theft Auto without her consent.
Even if you've never played the game, you might have seen a picture of a blonde lady in a bikini showing a peace sign.
This lady is actually Lacey Jonas, a famous actress in the game. Her picture was used a lot to promote the game.
When you first meet Lacey Jones in Grand Theft Auto V , the actress is down an alleyway hiding from the paparazzi. She asks the player for a ride home, claiming that she's 'really famous' and the 'voice of a generation', adding that she has starred in a few romcoms and cheerleader movies.
But as the game goes on, you learn that she's not as famous as she claims to be. In reality, she used to be famous, but now she's not so popular anymore. People who write gossip stories about famous people are now more interested in her.
Lindsay Lohan's lawyers said that the game copied how she looks and talks for the character. They even said the character wore similar clothes and did the pose where she made a peace sign, which is something Lindsay is known for.
Yep, the peace sign that everyone knows.
They also said that the people who made the character used a picture of Lindsay from 2007 when they created it.
One judge, Eugene Fahey, said in his decision: "The pictures in the game are unclear and are making fun of the style, appearance, and personality of a modern young woman who goes to the beach... They don't look like the real Lindsay."
In simpler words, this means the game's pictures aren't detailed enough to say they are exactly like Lindsay.
It's like saying, "You're so ordinary that it's impossible to say this is about you." Ouch.
A group of five judges later said no to Lindsay's request, saying it was clear that the character in the game wasn't meant to be her specifically.
Turns out, Lindsay Lohan isn't the only person who tried to sue Rockstar Games because a character in their game looked a lot like them.
In 2014, a reality TV star named Karen Graven also took legal action against Rockstar Games. She wanted $40 million, saying the character Antonia Bottino was based on her story and how she looks.
But her claim was also turned down.
Since 2022, Grand Theft Auto V has sold more than 170 million copies. It's the most popular game on both game consoles and PCs. It also holds the record for being the game that made $1 billion in sales the fastest.
