Lizzo explained the reason she chose to wait before having sex for the first time
Lizzo is opening up in a more honest way about her sex life, and she admitted that she had not always told the full truth about when she lost her virginity. She shared that she had previously said something different, but now wanted to be clear about her real experience.
The About Damn Time singer spoke with Benny Blanco, Lil Dicky, and Kristin Batalucco, where she explained that she waited until her 30s before having sex for the first time. During the conversation, she spoke openly and in detail about how that decision shaped her journey.
"I was a late bloomer," she said on the Friends Keep Secrets podcast.
The hosts then tried to guess how old she was when it happened, and the Grammy-winning artist revealed that it took place in 2020. The moment surprised everyone in the room.
"Isn't that crazy?" she added. "I wasn't even thinking about it… I promised myself when I was younger that I wouldn't have sex until I won a Grammy."
The reaction from the hosts showed clear shock, and Lil Dicky followed up by asking if she would have still gone through with it if she had not won a Grammy at that time.
Lizzo has now earned four Grammy Awards, with her first win happening in January 2020 when she was about 32 years old. That milestone played a role in her timeline. She laughed when answering the question and made it clear that it did not happen on the night of the Grammys, but instead shortly after.
"I feel a weight off my chest right now," she shared. "It was so embarrassing. I was in a friend group of girls. We were all girling one night and it was like, 'Wait, Lizzo are you a virgin?'"
She continued: "I said, 'I love the D.' I said that. And it held me over for a little while."
Her explanation gave more context about how she handled questions in the past and how she felt pressure to fit in with others around her at the time.
Lizzo also spoke about her first kiss, which happened when she was 21, and she described the experience as something that did not go well at all.
"Y'all have no idea. It was religious for me too. Like, when we were teenagers at my church, we all made a pact that we wouldn't do anything before marriage. And them, I was just so scared. Like, nobody wanted to kiss me," she shared.
"It was a New Year's Eve thing and he forced it on me. I was really mad and I was like, 'My first kiss is ruined.' I was so mad," Lizzo continued.
Looking back, she described those early moments as confusing and emotional, especially since they did not match the expectations she had built up over time.
Choosing to wait before having sex is more common than many people assume. Researchers have noted that the stigma around waiting has started to fade, especially as younger generations like Gen Z and millennials continue to shift how they view relationships and personal choices.
The singer is currently in a relationship with Myke Wright, and the couple confirmed they were together in 2022. Since then, they have kept most details of their relationship private.
Even though they stay out of the spotlight, Lizzo has shared small glimpses into her personal life. She spoke briefly about their relationship during an appearance on The Howard Stern Show in 2022, giving fans a better sense of how things are going.
"I am very much in love with Myke. 100 percent. There's nobody else I'm going to be with for the rest of my life."
Last year, Lizzo also explained that Wright helped change how she thinks about weight loss. He introduced her to the idea of “weight release,” which shifted her mindset in a more positive direction.
"I want to be very intentional about the words that come out of my mouth because there's young people who are watching me and they're experiencing what I'm putting into the world," she said on On Purpose with Jay Shetty. "They're applying it to their own experience and their own life just like I did when I was a kid."
She made it clear that she thinks carefully about what she shares, especially because many people look up to her and may take her words seriously in their own lives.
