A retired Volkswagen employee named Momir Bojic and his wife Nada spent 18 months building his dream car and now they get attention wherever they go. It's a piece of art on wheels.
Looks Like A Normal Car, Right? You'd Better Look A Little Bit Closer
#1 He Had A Dream
Momir Bojic had a dream of building a car that would make people take a second look at it. When he retired from the Volkswagen plant he and his wife Nada spent 72 weeks building his dream car. Of course, it had to be a Beetle, so they purchased a used 1975 model from a local fair and started their work.
#2 Stripping The Car
To do what they wanted they first had to strip the entire car. They removed the doors, roof and stripped the chassis. The couple then made their own wooden bumper, wipers, wooden pedals, wheel caps, signal lamps, tail lights, door mirrors, steering wheel, parcel shelf, dashboard, clock and even a wooden radio.
#3 Rooftop Design
Hailing originally from Bosnia, Momir created the thousands of thumbnail-sized pieces of oak to cover the automobile in a design replicating the wood-tiled roofs that are common in his homeland of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
#4 The Fine Details
The couple worked morning, noon, and night and got the car completely finished and road-ready in just 72 weeks. Nada created the VW emblem herself and hand carved it to look like the original.
#5 Over 11,000 Wood Chips
Each tile they created for the outer covering involved a process which involved 23 different procedures, including cutting, chamfering, beveling, drilling and smoothing, before it was applied to the beetle. This process was the most time-consuming and least enjoyable. They had to create over 11,000 tiny chips to cover the car. The couple said they had their most fun assembling the tiles and other pieces onto the body itself, creating the actual wooden car.
#6 Talk Of The Town
He wanted a car that would make people stop and look and talk, and he created exactly that. Momir gets lots of attention wherever he goes in his new VW car.
#7 Almost Totally Made Of Wood
Every detail was carefully planned, with just about every aspect of the automobile now made of oak wood, including the windshield wipers and dashboard.
#8 Close Attention To Details
The dashboard, including the radio, were hand tooled by his wife Nada while Momir created all of the tiny chips and the wheel coverings, wipers and running boards and trim. He even made himself a matching wooden hat to wear as he drives around town showing off his amazing work.
#9 Next They Remake A Sportscar
Momir is already planning his next project, a sports car and of course, trimmed throughout with thousands of pieces of wood. Nada will be helping, as she is better at the fine detailed aspects.
Now that's a cool car!
