There is but one cardinal rule, never come between a person and their dog. OP was pushed into a corner by his in-laws and fiance when they did the one thing he asked them not to.

OP was happily engaged to his fiance Meg and the two were in the process of moving in together. OP added that he had a large house and since Meg didn't have space at her current place, he agreed to host his in-laws for a small Thanksgiving vacation.

He said that he didn't like the in-laws because of their conservative, conspiracy theorist, racist and sexist views.

He said that his fiance wasn't like her family but since it had been some time since she had last seen them he agreed to let them stay with him.

Things went well enough when the parents arrived but they were waiting on Meg's sister to join in on the fun.

OP's dog Lucy was also part of the gathering. OP added that while his fiance did not particularly like dogs, she tolerated Lucy.

The sister finally pulled into the driveway while OP was in the bathroom. He heard his fiance's mother say that she was going to take the dog out front to say hi to the sister. OP told them clearly not to do that since Lucy was required to be on a leash outdoors. He asked for a minute until he could come handle her himself.

Not 2 minutes later, all hell broke loose. Turns out, Meg's mom had declined to abide by OP's wishes and took Lucy out anyway. That's when she ran out and got lost. OP drove all day but could not locate her.

OP was scared she would get in an accident or get hurt in some other way. His fiance helped him in the search but the sister and parents stayed home. OP continued to search throughout Thanksgiving day.

It wasn't until the afternoon that Lucy was found. OP's biggest fears were confirmed and she had bite marks in her flesh.

OP took her to the ER and was relieved to hear that she would be okay.

OP locked himself and Lucy in his room after an exhausting day only to have Meg's father knock on the door to insult him. He said that OP needed to be a man and called Lucy a 'stupid dog'.

OP had enough. He told them to leave and said he did not care where they went when Meg protested. It wasn't until OP threatened to call the cops that the family left.

Meg also left and called OP rude for reacting in that way. She said that it was an honest mistake. OP was suspicious since he had told her mother not to let Lucy out.

Commenters told OP he had done the right thing.

When asked if anyone even apologized, OP said that they were snarky with him the entire time and even complained about not getting a Thanksgiving dinner.

Commenters saw Meg's behavior as a red flag and thought she wasn't as different from her family as OP thought.

Some even speculated that the mother had let the dog out on purpose.
