After enduring a 14,000-volt electric shock on his left shoulder, an electrician didn't just see stars – according to doctors' report on January 23 in the New England Journal of Medicine, he ended up with cataracts shaped like stars imprinted on both eyes.
Man Left With Strange Burns In His Eyes After Being Zapped With 14,000 Volts Of Electricity
Lots of jobs in the world can be risky, but we might forget about the dangers when we do them every day. For instance, jobs like being a bricklayer, electrician, or carpenter, which are called blue-collar jobs, need a bunch of skill and paying attention to what's around you to avoid getting hurt.
Sadly, in California, a man accidentally caused a really strange health condition just by bumping his shoulder.
This shows that even in jobs that may not seem very dangerous at first, simple things like a shoulder bump can have unexpected consequences.
The older electrician is still facing problems with his eyes because he got a shock of 14,000 volts while working.
Interestingly, this made real stars appear inside his eyes because of the flow of electricity and harm to the optic nerve.
After the accident at work, where the strong electric current passed through his body, the man from California ended up getting cataracts, which is a disease that affects the eyes.
So, how did it happen? He accidentally hit his shoulder against a live wire, and the electric surge went through him and his optic nerve, the part that links the eyes to the brain.
In a bizarre twist, the incident resulted in star-shaped electrical burns in his eyes, as reported by The New England Journal of Medicine.
The patient, whose name was not disclosed, received treatment from an associate professor of clinical ophthalmology at the University of California, San Diego. Subsequently, the professor discussed the peculiar occurrence with NBC News.
Dr Bobby Korn said: "The extreme current and voltage that passed through this important natural wire caused damage to the optic nerve itself."
A photo of his eyes started spreading on X (previously Twitter), leaving people uncertain about its authenticity.
One person knew a little about the case and commented: “It looks like those eyes are on a dead body, but yes miraculously, he lived, he ain't even blind, just bad vision.”
“Looks like they were able to fix the cataracts, unfortunately tho, he still might gradually lose sight. He's one lucky person.”
Another asked: “I know it’s a silly question but could he still see?” while someone else joked: “If he doesn’t have X-Ray vision, what was the point?”
Across the internet, the prevailing sentiment was relief that the electrician survived and was in good health, despite the damage to his eyes caused by the electrical shock.
A commenter was pleased that he was able to see: “Increíble that he didn't became blind after that accident.”
