A Reddit user who meticulously tracked his alcohol consumption throughout the year 2023 has shared insights into how it affected his life.
From unwinding after a stressful day at work, celebrating a special occasion, enjoying a date, or simply indulging in a drink for no particular reason, people find various reasons to consume alcohol.
This variety of motivations can sometimes make it challenging to maintain awareness of just how frequently one indulges in alcohol.
In an effort to more effectively monitor his drinking habits, a Reddit user known as 'GuruRoo' devised a color-coded chart.
He diligently used this chart to track his alcohol consumption for the entire year of 2023.
He later shared the results in a detailed post on Reddit, including a key that explained the significance of each color represented on the chart.
On the chart, green days indicated complete abstinence from alcohol; yellow represented moderate drinking, defined as one to three drinks; orange signified a slightly higher intake of four to six drinks; red marked days when he consumed seven or more drinks; and black, fittingly, denoted days of 'blackout' drinking.
The chart data revealed an interesting pattern early in the year, showing only one instance of blackout drinking in late February.

Despite this, the graph displayed quite a few red days along with numerous yellow and orange days throughout the year.
As the year drew to a close, the Reddit user reflected on his drinking pattern and realized that the number of days he had consumed one to six drinks far exceeded the days he had remained sober.
The graph showed that he spent 88 days of the year completely sober, which meant that he consumed alcohol on 277 days - almost two-thirds - of the year.
Contemplating these findings, he decided to share his reflections and experiences regarding his alcohol consumption on Reddit.

In his Reddit post, he expressed that observing the visual representation of his drinking habits on the graph inspired him to aim for a reduction in his alcohol consumption.
He stated: "Simply tracking my consumption really motivated me to chase more sober days. Primed to make 2024 even greener."
Other users on the Reddit thread r/dataisbeautiful reacted positively to his post, with one person expressing admiration for his diligent tracking:
"Wow, dude. I'm surprised you were able to keep track!"
The poster acknowledged that it was easier to monitor his days of heavier drinking, categorizing them as '7+'.
However, he noted that his tracking wasn't limited to just his drinking habits.
In a subsequent comment, he estimated that his expenditure on drinks throughout the year ranged from at least $4,500 to as much as $7,630.
