At some point or another, we've all pushed our luck, but not to the degree Ashley Revell did.

In order to gamble with his life savings in Las Vegas in 2004, the British man sold his house, car, and even his clothes.

As if it weren't enough, the terrifying incident was also captured on camera for a Sky TV program.

In contrast to the majority of us, Revell, who was 32 at the time, put a huge sum of money on the risky gamble.

Revell, a native of London, sold his stuff at car boot sales and auctions in the months before his major meltdown.

He was so determined to win big that he even got support from an online bookie and legally changed his identity to "Ashley Blue Square Revell" through a deed poll.

Revell arrived in Sin City with about £76,840 (US$135,300) in his pocket and made his way to the Plaza Hotel & Casino.

Sky even recorded the remarkable occasion for a reality show, Double or Nothing, with viewers urging him to support black on the night, adding to the pressure (not that he needed it).

Revell made the biggest wager of his life on a single roulette wheel and selected red in front of the onlookers in the room and spectators at home.

But fate was on his side; as a result of the split-second choice, Revell doubled his prize money and won a stunning £153,680 ($270,600).

The Londoner confessed how close he'd gone to bankruptcy in a later interview with CNN.

“I was seconds away from losing all I had. I sold everything of value that I owned to fund this crazy bet,” Revell admitted, adding: “I could have left Las Vegas with nothing more than the hired tuxedo I was wearing.”

But the rest of his life wasn't as fortunate, as Revell founded Poker UTD, which quickly went out of business.

Without knowing what fate had in store for him, he subsequently spent the remaining money on a lengthy motorcycle trip around Europe.

The 32-year-old later met his wife on the trip, and in 2022, he would launch a URL-shortening service.

Revell may have actually had luck on his side after all.
