Pranks are usually all about fun stuff, like messing with your friends by giving them the wrong dress code or playing tricks on your roommate. It's super rare to see a hoax that goes on for decades and fools a whole town. So, there's this dude in Brantley, Alabama, who pulled off this epic prank for 50 years. He convinced the whole town that Bigfoot was kickin' it there.
Back in the 70s, something interesting happened in the small town of Brantley, Alabama.
It totally blew everyone's minds! These mysterious tracks appeared out of nowhere, sparking intense curiosity and intrigue among the locals. People couldn't help but wonder, "What's happening here?"
The mystery got so intense that even the local cops were called in, and super excited search dogs were brought in to solve the puzzle.
But Eugene Hendrick had a sneaky grin on his face because he was the one pulling all the strings, knowing exactly what he was doing.
He told WFSA: "I got a wild hair one day. I wanted to do something about a Sasquatch. I cut some big ole feet and bolted some shoes to them and walked around by the river making tracks. I even made claw marks in the trees."
Jimmy McGinty was just a kid when the whole Bigfoot thing supposedly happened in their town.
He remembered: "I was just going out by the river and saw some unusual tracks on the sand bar. I went and looked and saw these big footprints, and I'm going, am I seeing this right or not?'”
The huge tracks freaked everyone out. But when the cops got involved, Eugene was like, "Nah, I'm shutting this whole thing down."
He claimed: “I put the cut-out feet and shoes away and kept it a secret until 2017."
Surprisingly, he managed to keep his antics hidden for half a century until a fateful meeting with a local store owner changed the course of events.
Hunter Royal, owner of the Old Gin Creek County Store in Brantley, had a brilliant idea: he introduced a massive burger in his deli called 'The Sasquatch Burger.'
At this point, Eugene thought it was time to reveal the truth about his renowned prank.
Jimmy McGinty is Hunter's son-in-law, and he couldn't believe the prank had done him in.
He confessed: "I knew I wasn’t crazy then. But, he got me.”
Taking the whole thing in good humour, they went massive on Bigfoot merchandise, selling shirts, books, snacks and much more. However, Jimmy still felt they needed more.
He laughed: "I drove to Indiana to pick up a 3,500-pound, solid concrete, unpainted Sasquatch. It was something to see coming down the interstate.”
Unsurprisingly, Hunter couldn't believe his eyes when he saw the big fella for the first time.
He beamed: “I was in shock. It has made a landmark for the community.”
Remarkably, to bring the story to a heartwarming conclusion, it was Eugene who used his skills as a professional artist to paint the animal.
But the question remains: Could there be a Bigfoot in Brantley? Hunter and Jimmy sure seem to think so.
“If you don’t believe in Sasquatch, you’re the problem,” said Hunter.
“Sasquatch does exist in Brantley, Alabama,” added Jimmy.
