A man who survived a brutal bear attack has shared the chilling sound he remembers hearing right before he lost consciousness. His story is a mix of luck, quick thinking, and a level of danger most people can barely imagine.

Dan Bigley, who loved backpacking and spending time in the wilderness, had been living in Alaska when he crossed paths with a powerful brown bear. The attack left him permanently blind and nearly cost him his life, marking a moment he says changed everything.

Speaking with the Black Rifle Coffee Company, Dan explained that he had just started a new relationship with a woman named Amber. The very next day, his friend invited him on a fishing trip, and he decided to go along, not knowing how dramatically the outing would alter his future.

"I said to Amber, I was like 'Well, hey, I'll call you when I get off the river,'" he recalled. "Little did we know I would have less than 12 hours left to see."

After spending the day fishing, Dan said they were walking back toward their campground. They were only a short distance away when his dog, Maya, let out what he called “a little growl,” a sound that made him pay attention immediately because Maya rarely reacted without reason.

"I look up and sure enough like, 30 feet in front of us on the trail, there's a large brown bear." he said, remembering how fast the moment shifted from quiet to dangerous.

Although Dan had come across bears before, this time felt different. He noticed right away that the animal was visibly agitated, which made the situation far more serious. He and his friend decided to move away slowly in hopes of avoiding a confrontation.

The two men thought they had created enough distance and even began talking about how wild the encounter had been. But the calm didn’t last. Without warning, Dan said they saw the tall alders ahead of them shaking, a sign that something large was moving through the brush.

"Immediately, my heart just sinks to my toes because when you get followed by a bear, like stalking behavior or cut off by bears, that's generally pretty bad situation you don't want to be in."

Within moments, the situation escalated. Dan said that as they turned back along the trail, the bear suddenly burst around the corner at an alarming speed. He described the motion as chaotic and fast, with the animal moving toward them with incredible force.

He later learned that they had unknowingly walked close to the bear’s cubs, which placed them in what he called “the worst possible situation.” A mother bear defending her young is unpredictable and extremely dangerous.

Dan says the bear charged at him with what felt like “missile speed.” He tried to stand firm and hoped the animal might stop, but he understood very quickly that this was no bluff. The attack was real, and he had only seconds to react.

"I'll never forget her eyes, kind of burning yellow with fury and her mouth agape," he recalled, explaining that the moment felt unreal as he tried to move away. He said he took a few desperate steps and dove into the bushes, hoping it would give him even a small chance to survive.

"Before I'd even his the ground, she had a hold of my legs and was pulling me out of the bushes." Dan continued, describing how quickly the bear closed the distance. There was no time to prepare or protect himself. The animal reached him before he even hit the ground, dragging him out with overwhelming strength.

"I just remember hearing this pitiful screaming sound that sounded like the sound of a dying animal and I just remember having the realization, 'Holy s***, that's me making that sound.'"

The next sound he remembers is what he described as his own skull “crunching,” a noise so disturbing that it stayed in his mind even as he drifted in and out of consciousness. The impact was so severe that he later learned how close he had come to losing his life.

Dan said he regained consciousness three or four times during the attack. Each time he came to, he hoped the nightmare was over. But when he called out to his friend for help, the bear returned and continued the assault, leaving him in a far worse state than before.

He recalled how the bear even rolled him onto his back and bit across his face from side to side. He said the animal “chewed,” a detail that showed the level of damage it inflicted and the terrifying power behind every bite.

Eventually, the bear left, and Dan’s friend—along with a group of nearby fishermen—managed to reach him and pull him to safety. The scene they found was horrific, but they acted quickly to get him the help he urgently needed.

When Dan arrived in the ER, doctors described his injuries as nearly impossible to survive. His head and face were so damaged that he was unrecognizable, and six of the seven major arteries in the area had been either cut or severely torn. Medical staff said his wounds were “incompatible with life.”

Yet in what many consider a miracle, the bear had missed his brain by only a few millimeters. That narrow margin spared him from instant death and prevented devastating additional injury.

Dan survived the emergency surgery, avoided life-threatening infection, and eventually woke up from a coma 12 days later. His recovery was long and painful, but he continued to fight through every stage of it.

After he healed enough to return to normal life, he reunited with Amber. Their relationship grew stronger as they moved forward together, and today they share two children, building a family after surviving an ordeal that could have ended everything.
