The family of a guy claims he took stacks of $100 notes out of their shared bank account before throwing the money out the window of his car while driving along an Oregon highway.
Man Throws $200,000 In Cash Out His Car Window After Draining Family's Shared Accounts
Police in Oregon stopped a man after noticing him throwing $100 dollars out the window of his car into a busy highway.
About 120 miles south of Portland, Colin Davis McCarthy, 38, was seen throwing large amounts of cash out of his car as he traveled down the congested Interstate 5.
The stunt, which was clearly generating quite a sensation on the busy roadway, attracted numerous calls from members of the public, according to Oregon State Police.
Several drivers stopped their cars and jumped out to grab some of the 'floating' notes, some of which were $100 bills.
McCarthy allegedly told the Oregon State Police that he wanted to "bless others with gifts of money" and that he had wasted about $200,000 in all.
McCarthy complied when officers ordered him to stop throwing the banknotes "because it was causing a significant traffic hazard."
McCarthy has not been charged criminally, according to the police, but Lieutenant Jim Andrews of the Oregon State Police added: "He could have been charged in a situation like this for danger being created because of his actions - disorderly conduct, potentially reckless endangering, but most likely disorderly conduct.”
"I know the troopers considered charging him with that or arresting him, but after a conversation with him they elected not to."
Officers added that other road users had cleaned up the loose bills in a very efficient manner.
“Motorists did a thorough job of gathering the loose money as troopers were unable to locate any further currency after the incident,” police said in a press release.
“Troopers followed up the next morning and were still unable to locate further bills along the roadway.”
A woman who found some of the money told KEZI: “It’s hundred-dollar bills floating around and I'm like, ‘what!?’ So my boyfriend and I decided to go one way, he goes the other way and so far I've found 300 dollars!"
Although some people were fortunate enough to be in the right place at the right moment, police have warned residents against looking for any of the money, warning: “These searches create a hazardous condition and put both the searchers and motorists at risk.”
McCarthy's relative later spoke with authorities, claiming that the money came from "draining" their bank accounts and left them "penniless."
The family requested that anyone who has come across any of the notes turn them into Oregon State Police via the police.
