Images have emerged once again of a man who turned his skin entirely blue by self-medicating various health conditions. Paul Karason, who had dermatitis and other ailments, ingested a combination of silver compounds to alleviate his flaky skin.
Man Turned Completely Blue After Taking Dietary Supplements For Years
A man known as "Papa Smurf" rose to online fame overnight because of his "completely" blue skin.
Paul Karason used a silver compound combined as a self-medication for his dermatitis for more than ten years.
A man from Washington habitually consumed a homemade silver chloride colloid and applied a colloidal silver solution to his face as a remedy for his sinus issues, dermatitis, and acid reflux.
He asserted that both his arthritis and acid reflux were healed as a result of this practice.
The fact is that silver has been utilized for centuries due to its antibacterial properties for treating infections. Nevertheless, after the emergence of penicillin, which was considerably more effective, the utilization of silver became redundant. Nonetheless, Paul's life began to transform after his appearance on TODAY in 2008.
His wife claimed that he "didn't appreciate" the nickname Papa Smurf, which was given to him shortly.
“That was a nickname he didn’t appreciate, depending on who said it,” she said.
“If it was a kid who ran up to him saying ‘Papa Smurf’, it would put a smile on his face. But if it was an adult, well...”
"And he looks at me and he says, 'What have you got on your face?' 'I don't have anything on my face!'" Paul added.
"He says, 'Well, it looks like you've got camouflage makeup on or something. And by golly, he came in and he was very fair-skinned, as I used to be. And that's when it hit me."
Unfortunately, Paul revealed that his personal life was sliding downward just a year after his appearance on the NBC program.
"I’m in a place right now where it’s very difficult for me to make my own, and my resources are limited and it’s very expensive," he explained.
Paul experienced heart problems and prostate cancer a short time afterward.
He had to relocate to a Bellingham homeless shelter in 2012 after losing his house.
Paul, 62, tragically passed away in 2013 from complications from a heart attack, asthma, and a serious stroke.
Until his passing, he continued to use colloidal silver.
If testing and regulations are followed, colloidal silver may be sold in the UK as a cosmetic.
The substance cannot, however, be sold as a medication or dietary supplement.
