There are several aspects of being a woman that men will never quite understand. Next to child birth, menstruation is probably one of the biggest biological differences they have trouble wrapping their minds around—even if it is a completely natural part of the female reproductive system.
That being said, we do appreciate those considerate gentlemen out there who try their best to empathize with us during our monthly discomfort. But to those who are under the impression that we are either being overly dramatic or that, as one deeply confused man has recently asserted, “menstrual pain is a myth”, I have only this to say: no uterus, no opinion!
#1 Men really need to shut their mouths when it comes to talking about women's bodies.
#2 Last year, soon after 19-year-old Ryan Williams said women deserve to pay the tampon tax because they can't "control their bladders."
Author Frank Bures argued in an excerpt from The Geography of Madness that PMS was "a figment of our menstruation-fearing culture."
#3 We have heard of the dude who asked why women couldn't just "hold in their periods."
The guy who reported his co-worker to HR for using a hot water bottle for cramps, and this whole list of men who proved conclusively that they have no idea how a women's body works. Now we have another idiot to add to the ranks after he tweeted that he, "as a guy," does not believe in menstrual pain.
#4 The latest of these ridiculous remarks is by a man who tweeted that menstrual pain is a myth.
#5 Ah yes, that classic folklore about menses that was made up so no one knows the truth, that period actually feel ~*super good*~.
#6 The Twitter conversation began with a fairly innocent question: "What is worse than a broken heart?"
#7 A tweeter under the handle @RAFIAT_BELLO answered very, very honestly:
#8 When one woman chimed in with "Menstrual pain, homelessness, hunger etc. Then @goldenconceptng dropped the bomb:
#9 Pro tip: If your sentence starts off with "as a guy," zip it before saying anything about uteruses.
#10 As any woman who's dealt with period-related pain knows, this statement goes against lived experience, not to mention medical knowledge.
#11 Yes, random dude.
Many centuries ago, women all got together and agreed to lie about menstruation symptoms like cramping, nausea, severe headaches, mood swings, bloating, aches, soreness, fatigue, and swelling. We did it to keep Midol and Ben & Jerry's in business! How ever did you guess?
#12 Luckily, more than a few women on Twitter were willing to educate this ignoramus.
#14 It just hurt so much.
According to recent Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists guidelines, 40 percent of women get PMS and five to eight percent have a serious form that may require medical treatment. "PMS can be a serious condition which can dramatically impact on the quality of a woman’s life affecting her personal and professional life," Shaughn O’Brien, Keele University Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology and lead author of the guidelines, said in a press release.
#15 And it was only a matter of time before the fire memes came rolling in.
#16 Oh, and of course there were memes. So many memes.
#17 As a guy, why do you think your opinion on this topic matters?
#18 As a woman, who if even asked you?
#19 Look, it is usually not cool to pile on someone and shame them for saying or thinking something really crappy but in this case, we will make an exception.
#20 We can only hope this Twitter tirade has taught @goldenconceptng at least one important lesson:
#21 So, what did we learn here?
Well, number one, if you are a cis man who has never experienced menstruation, you have no right to comment on it.
#22 Number two?
If you can't relate to something, just pretend it doesn't exist.
