A man from Surrey is still troubled by the experience of snapping a shark attack, a nearly unthinkable feat.

Dan White finished his diving certification in Egypt in 2018. Dan saw a whitetip shark coming toward his diving group while they were in the water.

Though most would go crazy if they ever saw the top predator up close, Dan held his composure because he'd gone up against three sharks the day before 'with no trouble at all'.

The diver then planned to take a picture of the animal since he considered it to be a "cool encounter."

Initially silent, the shark's behavior changed as other German divers joined the group.

As Dan afterwards recalled, the shark's behavior changed maybe due to its discomfort with the large number of people around it and fear of one of the divers' bubbles.

"As I was filming I noticed that one of the outlet diver's bubbles spooked the shark and it turned to investigate," he told Tracking Sharks in 2018.

Dan's footage captures the shark approaching the divers and coming down to their level. The animal attacks one of the divers after getting closer, biting at his leg.

"It bit into the diver's leg, latched on, thrashed around, and ended up going over almost like a cartwheel," Dan told the BBC's Why Sharks Attack.

"It was crazy, it wouldn't let go for what felt like forever. It ended up tearing his calf muscle completely off his leg," he added.

The diver's calf muscle was not only ripped to pieces by the shark, but it also bit right through to the bone.

"There was a big plume of blood in the water. Another diver started screaming you could hear her scream - a shriek noise in your ear," Dan continued.

"It's horrifying to listen to."

The video captures the group's eerie scream even though they are 10 meters below the water's surface.

Following the shark attack, first responders assisted the man to the surface, where they gave him painkillers and used a tourniquet on his leg.

The victim was then hurried to the shore and transported to the hospital. Amazingly, there was no need to amputate his limb.

When YouTube viewers saw the video, they quickly expressed their surprise in the comments area. One individual wrote:  "Very scary footage."

Another added: "Wow, absolutely terrifying."

While a third penned: "The most chilling part of this is still being able to hear the screaming underwater."

Dan White's harrowing experience with a whitetip shark serves as a powerful reminder of the uncertainties lurking beneath the surface of our ocean adventures.
