After seeing Pedro Pascal portray the role in a Saturday Night Live comedy, Super Mario fans demanded that he take Chris Pratt's place in the upcoming movie.
Mario Fans Want Pedro Pascal To Replace Chris Pratt Following SNL Performance
In a parody live-action recreation of the game, Pascal took on the role of the beloved plumber.
The sketch, which features Mario smuggling Princess Peach through a dystopian version of the Mushroom Kingdom, was inspired by HBO's The Last Of Us, which also stars the actor of Chilean descent.
As of right now, Chris Pratt from Guardians of the Galaxy is playing the part, with Charlie Day playing Luigi and Anya Taylor-Joy playing Peach.
Fans are not particularly excited about the new movie, despite the fact that it is being made by Illumination, the company that created the Despicable Me series.
Charles Martinet, a seasoned voice actor who has played Mario since the late 1980s, has drawn criticism for Pratt's casting.
In addition, Pratt has drawn criticism for lacking the character's trademark fake Italian accent.
Pascal, in contrast, speaks Mario's catchphrases in a dramatic but true rendition of his accent.
Despite being incredibly ironic, Super Mario fans loved the short right away and pleaded on social media for Pascal to take the major role instead.
One even joked on Twitter: “…it’s not too late to replace chris pratt with pedro pascal as Mario, right?????”.
Others quickly followed, with another fan tweeting: “I’m not even joking…pedro pascal Mario is infinitely better than chris pratt Mario”.
Many even claimed that the upcoming film would not measure up to his SNL sketch.
One tweet read: “The Pedro Pascal #SNL Mario bit is going to be better than the actual Mario movie”
After the highly anticipated sketch, some fans chose to provoke Pratt, with one writing: “…looking forward to cpratt's awkward and overwrought response to people deciding pedro pascal should've been mario after tonight's snl lmao”.
Even game journalists have had to contain their enthusiasm, as MoblieSyrup editor Brad Shankar noted: “Pedro Pascal as #Mario isn’t something I ever knew I needed, but now it’s all I want. #TheLastOfUs #SNL.”
In a Reddit discussion, a user suggested casting Pascal and the film's director Taika Waititi as the mustachioed brothers. Pascal had already been considered as a potential contender.
That wish, however, is unlikely to come true because neither of them will be in the upcoming film, which is scheduled to be released on April 7 of this year.
